Taking care of yourself

It is easy to neglect yourself when you are busy caring for someone else. However, as a carer it is important that you look after yourself. Sadly, one in five carers report that their health suffers as a direct result of caring. Caring without a break, without proper sleep and without support is extremely stressful. It is important that you recognise this and take it seriously. Remember that a little can go a long way so when you can, try and take some time out to do something for yourself.

As a carer it is important to look after yourself and make sure you and the person you are caring for stay healthy.  Have a look at the “Menus Count” website.  This is a nutritional tool and recipe bank made in partnership with Torfaen Social Care and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Evidence from Carers U.K. suggests that Wales’ Top 3 Caring Worries are revealed as:
1. Money worries - Being unable to cope financially
2. Emotional strain - Finding it too stressful/upsetting
3. I wouldn’t know how - Not having the experience or skills to be a carer
