Congratulations to the Gwent Interventional Radiology Team and the Fracture Liaison Service on their success at the MediWales Innovation Awards 2024!

The Research and Development team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) recently held a special launch event to mark the induction of the first cohort of research champions, with the aim of creating a more impactful research culture.

Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection, especially in young children, characterised by inflammation and congestion in the small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs. This condition is primarily caused by viral infections such as RSV, common cold and flu.   

Patients and staff on Hafan Deg Ward at County Hospital are in for a treat this December! Ffrind i Mi volunteer, Alan, has dedicated his time to putting together a handmade advent calendar for them to countdown the days until Christmas.

We're supporting the Welsh Language Commissioner's Office's'Defnyddia dy Gymraeg' (Use your Welsh) campaign, which runs between 25th November and 9th December 2024 and encourages people to use welsh in their everyday lives.

The long-serving manager at Watkin-Davies Pharmacy in Bettws, Newport, has retired at the age of 91 after an extraordinary 59 years of service to the local community.

It is HIV Testing Awareness Week in Wales, and the Sexual Health team want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to test for HIV.

This expansion marks a monumental step forward in providing lung cancer patients nationwide with access to cutting-edge liquid biopsy technology, potentially transforming their diagnostic and treatment pathways.  

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is working to lower the financial and environmental impact caused by the unnecessary use of non-sterile gloves.

Filipino nurses from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have represented Wales in a one-in-a-lifetime visit to the childhood home of Florence Nightingale. The extraordinary experience to Lea Hurst, which took place on 12^th September, was organised by the Philippine Embassy in the UK, in partnership with Mr. Peter Kay, the owner of the historic house.

It’s been an incredible journey since the launch of our Clinical Trials Unit 2 years ago, and it’s great to look back at the impact that’s been made! From improving key performance to enhancing patient experiences, we are committed to delivering the best standard of research. This year there are over 80 studies taking place in ABUHB with our 400 participants and this work is crucial towards future healthcare.

This week, we are raising awareness about the importance of falls prevention by educating our staff, patients, and residents on effective falls management, prevention strategies, and identifying those most at risk. Falls prevention is essential in improving the health and well being of older adults, who are disproportionately affected by falls and related injuries.

The clinical team on A2 Cardiology Ward at The Grange University Hospital have this week become the first team in Gwent to earn accreditation status in recognition of the high standard of care they provide to patients.

As part of their commitment to community health, Newport Dragons are proud to announce they will host a Mental Health and Wellbeing event on Thursday 26^th September from 7-9pm at the home of Gwent rugby, Rodney Parade. To mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, we are delighted to announce that funding has been secured to support the ongoing provision of crucial specialist support services for those affected by suicide.

On August 30th, local artist Nathan Wyburn revealed his latest creation at The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre in Tredegar. The centrepiece, now prominently displayed at the centre’s main entrance, is a portrait of NHS founder and local hero, Aneurin Bevan. This artwork is uniquely crafted using images that trace the rich history of Tredegar.

A huge congratulations to Natalie Janes, who has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Nurse title by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), the UK’s oldest professional nursing organisation. The QNI is renowned for its dedication to improving nursing care for people in their homes and communities.

The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Mark Drakeford, paid visits to the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospital today (Friday 23^rd August), where he was given a glimpse of some of the amazing work being undertaken across the Health Board.

Heart failure does not mean your heart has stopped working, it means that the heart is unable to pump blood and oxygen around the body properly. It usually happens because the heart has become too weak or stiff. It means it needs some support to help it work better. Heart failure is a long-term condition that tends to get gradually worse over time. It cannot usually be cured, but the symptoms can often be controlled for many years.

After repeatedly being told that her Asperger’s Syndrome, sight and hearing impairments mean she could never work in an office, Alys Key made it her mission to prove them wrong. Now, having completed a six-month work experience placement with the Person-Centred Care Team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Alys has realised that her dream of a job in administration is well within her grasps.

As part of this year’s National Work Experience Week, which takes place from 22nd-26th April, we're celebrating and raising awareness of our Work Experience offer here in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Construction is now well underway for the brand-new Satellite Radiotherapy Centre at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny, with the building’s exterior now clearly visible on the Nevill Hall site.

A new Public Health report has identified the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on children and young people across Gwent - and has offered insights on the improvements we can make to help babies, children and young people grow.

Paracetamol is one of the most widely prescribed drugs for hospital inpatients but it has been identified as an area for environmental savings. In the Grange University Hospital alone, a new process could see a saving of £13,000, a 400kg plastic waste reduction and 700kg carbon eq saving per year. 

The cost of NHS dental treatment in Wales will increase from 1 April 2024.

On Saturday 23rd March 2024, the ‘National Day of Reflection’ organised by Marie Curie, marks the fourth anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown. 

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Medical Director has warned that the imminent BMA Junior Doctor strikes could have a significant impact on patient care – and has urged local residents not to attend hospital unless completely essential.

Please be aware that Junior doctors across NHS Wales will be taking industrial action from 7am on Monday 25th March to 7am on Friday 29th March 2024.

Today (Wednesday 20th March 2024), we held The Big Conversation event around Bereavement at the Christchurch Centre in Newport, where we were joined by patients, carers, staff, partners and our wider communities to discuss how we can improve bereavement services in Gwent.

There are more than 25,000 people living with cancer in Gwent and we have 51 Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) supporting people through their diagnosis and treatment. 

This week in Newport, artists showcased a range of artwork celebrating the contributions made by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic People in healthcare across Gwent. 

To help provide more accessibility and specialised healthcare services within GP Practices, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are promoting the different healthcare professionals and services available to patients which may be better suited to address specific concerns.

The pan-Wales Health Disability Activity Pathway Team have won an award in the category of “Improving Health and Wellbeing” at the NHS Wales Awards!

It’s Children's Mental Health Week, and we want parents and families to know how to start a conversation about mental health with their children and how to support them.

Isabel Dockings, 17 from Newport, was diagnosed at The Grange University Hospital with Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer that had spread at the top of her thigh. She now marks a year since her diagnosis on the 6th February 2023 and 3 months cancer free.

Today, on Monday 5^th February 2024, the brand-new Breast Care Unit at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr has welcomed Gwent patients for the very first time.

As a Health Board, we recognise the importance of creating an organisational culture where everyone feels they belong, including LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Patients are often fasted for excessive periods prior to surgery, and this results in them feeling uncomfortable, anxious and having worse outcomes. Evidence shows that small volumes of water are beneficial and rapidly emptied from the stomach.

Drinking water before theatre means less headaches and less chance of nausea post operatively. Drinking water will make you feel better before AND after surgery.

We are delighted to announce that the £19m Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre in Tredegar is now open to patients. 

The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre is built on the former site of where the Tredegar General Hospital once stood and is located in the hometown of Aneurin Bevan, the founder of the NHS.

A new housing scheme on the site of the former Brynmawr Clinic in Blaenau Gwent has officially opened.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Professor Euan Hails MBE, Consultant Nurse in Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health (S-CAMHS), who proudly accepted the ‘Queen’s Nurse’ title at The Queen's Nursing Institute Awards.

Our Human Resources and Employee Wellbeing Teams were recently successful in winning two NHS Wales Awards for their ‘Improving our Employee Investigations’ programme.

Judith Paget, Chief Executive of NHS Wales, presented the teams with their awards and said:

“The ‘improving employee investigations’ work – developed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board – is an important programme for all NHS Wales. We know that the application of our disciplinary policy can cause harm and the focus on delivering it more compassionately is crucial for the health and wellbeing of our people.”

This International Day of Disabled Persons (03 December), Coleg Gwent is shining a light on some of the students stepping up to take on supported internships at Nevill Hall Hospital, through the Care as Currency scheme. 

We’re delighted to announce that our brand-new, purpose-built Endoscopy Unit has opened its doors to patients today (Monday 6^th November 2023) at the Royal Gwent Hospital.

Three years ago, when George was 82 years old, he noticed a small white patch at the back of his tongue that was very sore.

After visiting his dentist and being referred to a specialist, a biopsy and scan confirmed that George had mouth cancer. Shortly after, he received an operation to remove some of his lymph nodes, which was successful and required no further treatment. George was referred, diagnosed, treated and declared cancer free within three months!

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board want to improve our care and support to people who are bereaved.

Healthcare Support Workers play a vital role in providing excellent care to patients across all NHS care settings. To celebrate Healthcare Support Worker Day, we asked some of our Healthcare Support Workers what they love about their role. 

On World Prematurity Day, we want to share with you Emmie’s story as told by her mother Vanessa.

Internationally Educated Nurses from across the UK were invited to a special reception hosted by His Majesty, King Charles III, in celebration of his 75th birthday which coincides with the NHS75 celebrations. This event notably honours the dedicated efforts of nurses and midwives throughout the decades. 

Tredegar Health Centre will soon be moving into their new home at The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre. As part of the decommissioning process in readiness for the move, Tredegar Health Centre has gone above and beyond to help others.

A group of children from Ringland Primary School were treated to a visit of the recently named 19 Hills Health & Wellbeing Centre, a £28m development on the old Ringland Medical Centre site.

This weekend we remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving our country. 

We are celebrating the important contribution that Occupational Therapy can make to people’s lives this Occupational Therapy Week.

Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages across a wide range of sectors including schools, hospitals, community settings and care homes. Occupational Therapy supports people experiencing short or long-term physical, mental health, environment or social difficulties. This may include difficulties with every-day tasks such as getting around the home as well as difficulties participating in hobbies, school and work.  

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are introducing a new Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). This service will be live on 6^th November 2023.

A huge congratulations to the ABUHB Haematology Nurse Specialists, who have been presented with a Medical Champion Award from Leukaemia Care at their annual Volunteer Awards in the Houses of Parliament!

It’s Acute Oncology Services (AOS) Awareness Week! The Acute Oncology Service supports cancer patients admitted to hospital who are unwell with a complication of their cancer, side effects of their cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy) or have a new diagnosis of cancer. 

A team of health professionals across the health board has been successful in an application to the Arts Council of Wales for continuing funding towards an Arts & Minds project.

Today, colleagues wore red to work in aid of Show Racism the Red Card's Wear Red Day.

Across the Health Board, we have worn pink to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Earlier this year we had a surprise visit from Sir Trevor McDonald, who came to the Health Board to meet our very own Vernesta Cyril OBE.

On Sunday 15th October, we celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae Sumae / Shwmae Day, where everyone is encouraged to ‘give welsh a go’. 

A recent change in our telephone system at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr has unfortunately resulted in the Physiotherapy Department being unable to retrieve a number of voicemails.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is delighted to announce the launch of a dynamic recruitment campaign aimed at addressing the shortage of staff within primary care roles across Monmouthshire.  

Rosie Jarman was described by her parents as a “bright, beautiful and intelligent” teenager who was a success at everything she turned her hand to. As well as having a gift for art, she had a passion for fast cars, acting and the outdoors.

When a patient is well enough to return home, hospital is not the best place for their recovery. Yet, due to difficulties with discharging patients back into the community, more than 300 people that no longer need hospital-based care are spending prolonged periods in hospital beds across Gwent.

Orthoptists at ABUHB Royal Gwent Hospital held a 'Patch Party' on the 18th August! The party was to coincide with NHS75 celebrations.  They were slightly late to the party as they had to wait for school holidays in order to celebrate with the children!

It’s no secret that as we age, our ability to carry out everyday activities may decrease. A contributory factor may be a change in hearing. The impact of hearing loss is often underrated. When hearing loss occurs, some people may withdraw from everyday conversations, leading to the possibility of isolation. Our brains need stimulation from talking to others. Experts show that there can be a link between hearing loss and dementia. Research suggests that by managing hearing loss with hearing aids, the risk of dementia can be reduced.

Flu is on the rise in Gwent- in the last week we have seen nearly a 50% increase in flu cases across our communities, and large increase in the number people being admitted to hospital with severe flu. We are urging anyone who is eligible for a free flu vaccination to take up their offer without delay- you can now walk-in to any of our mass vaccination centres without an appointment.

The Building Better Healthcare Awards were held in central London on 2nd November

The Radiology team at The Grange University Hospital have worked hard to create a child-friendly CT scanner. A computed tomography (CT) scan is a medical imaging technique that is used to gain detailed internal images of the body. To do this, the patient must go through a doughnut-shaped machine and lay very still for a few minutes. For many children, and adults, this can be an intimidating process which will often lead to the patient being sedated before entering the scanner. However, with the help of our suppliers at Canon, the Radiology team have been able to create a child-friendly CT scanner which has been covered in artwork of Ferdinand the Fox and Betty the Bunny.

This OT week, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists will be launching a campaign to raise the profile of Occupational Therapy, called ‘Lift Up Your Everyday’.

Monday 19th September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday. Please note that all GP surgeries and most community pharmacies will be closed on this day.

In light of confirmation that there will be a Bank Holiday to mark the Queen’s state funeral, the Health Board is postponing all planned appointments and clinics on Monday 19^th September 2022.

The Welsh Government has approved plans for the building of a new Health & Wellbeing Centre in the Newport East area.

The Gwent Regional Partnership Board led the development of plans for the new centre, with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board working together with Newport City Council, Newport City Homes and other partner organisations. The new Health and Wellbeing Centre will form part of a vibrant community hub for Newport East residents.

Interns at Nevill Hall Hospital have reached the end of the first course of a pilot scheme, where they've been working with different departments within the Facilities team.

This week is National Dietitians Week, it is always an important week in our calendars as it gives our profession a fantastic platform to highlight the important work we do all year round.

We are pleased to be able to relax visiting restrictions from 31^st May 2022 across Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, as a result to changes to Welsh Government's Covid-19 rules.

The Help Me Quit team are officially back out in the community delivering group face-to-face sessions. Alongside this, you can still opt to have your sessions virtually or via telephone to suit your individual needs.

Please note that to allow us to carry out improvement works, Belle Vue entrance at the Royal Gwent Hospital will be closed for approximately 4 weeks from the week commencing 13th June 2022.

It’s Brain Injury Awareness week, so we caught up with Thomas from the Community Neurological Rehabilitation Service (CNRS). The team offer rehabilitation support to adults in Gwent and Caerphilly after their discharge with a stroke or acquired brain injury to understand their condition, develop and re-learn skills, return to hobbies or employment, optimise quality of life, and increase independence and self-management in the community.

Audio speaker systems with a push button pad are now available at entrances throughout the Royal Gwent and Grange University Hospitals. The audio speakers will allow anyone who witnesses smoking on site/at entrances to anonymously press the button, which will play a recorded message to remind those who are smoking that it is not permitted.

The new Mynydd Mawr Memorial Garden at Nevill Hall Hospital was officially opened on Saturday 16th April 2022.

We are pleased to have been able to reduce visiting restrictions across our hospital sites, however we would like to remind our residents that patients attending the Emergency Department may only bring one person to accompany them. We are, unfortunately, unable to accommodate more than one visitor per patient due to the size of the Emergency Department’s waiting area, and at busy times, we may ask visitors to wait elsewhere if there are space constraints.

The Level 0 entrance (also known as Green Entrance 2) at the Royal Gwent Hospital will be CLOSED until the end of April 2022 due to improvement works.

Following our announcement on Tuesday evening, we are pleased to announce that we have now de-escalated from ‘business continuity’ status.

Thank you to all Gwent residents for your patience, support and questions. Our hospitals and services remain incredibly busy today and we would ask local people to help us by following the advice we issued last night.

The Health Board is under sustained and unprecedented pressure. Despite actions to try to stabilise our services, today we have had to declare a state of ‘business continuity’.

Our Emergency Department at The Grange University Hospital is extremely busy, and we have seen a record number of attendances, and waits to see a doctor, in some cases, are greater than 14 hours where the patient’s condition isn’t life threatening. We have very few beds available across our hospitals to accommodate patients requiring admission.

Yesterday, Monday 28^th March 2022, the Health Board held the first Staff Recognition Awards since before the Covid-19 Pandemic began.

Postponed from December 2021, the event- which usually sees colleagues from across the Health Board gathering to celebrate each other’s achievements at the Christchurch Centre in Newport- was held virtually for the very first time.

From Monday 28th March, our Mass Vaccination team will be relocating from Cwmbran Stadium to its new location at the Coleg Gwent Pontypool Campus.

On Wednesday 23rd March 2022, the ‘National Day of Reflection’ organised by Marie Curie, marks the second anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown. 

Thursday 17th March the Welsh Government and DHSC announced consultation on the regulations and code of practice for the implementation of Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) .

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board appreciates how important it is for patients and their loved ones to see each other whilst they are receiving care in hospital. We need to carefully balance this with the risk to patients, family members and staff that visiting brings whilst Covid is so rife in the community.

Due to the increasing challenges faced as a result of the new Omicron variant and in order to protect the safety of patients and staff, the Health Board will now be operating essential-only visiting from Monday 10th January 2022.

Please note that from 4 January until 1 July 2022, a section of road will be closed near our vaccination centre at General Offices in Ebbw Vale.

The town’s 200 year old Big Arch is undergoing restoration, therefore a section of Steel Works Road (B4485) that passes under the bridge will be closed, both ways, from Lime Avenue to Ebbw Vale Football Club.

Lateral flow tests can be used to check for COVID-19 by anyone who does not have symptoms. The tests are free and can be collected from most pharmacies or a local collection point.

You can also order online for home delivery. You can order 1 home testing kit (7 tests) at a time. Delivery takes 1 to 2 days.

With around 63% of the UK adult population classed as being overweight, the start of the New Year is a time when individuals have good intentions to change to a healthier way of eating. However, this is also a peak time for when social media and celebrities try to influence people to follow the latest diet trend.

Christmas is a time for families to be together, and so we completely appreciate how important it is for families to be able to speak with their loved ones who are patients in our Emergency Department on Christmas Day.

Please note that pregnant women can attend any of our Mass Vaccination Centres without an appointment for any of their COVID-19 vaccines.

If you are over 20 weeks pregnant, please walk to the front of the queue, make yourself known to staff and you will be fast tracked as a priority.

Whilst we are trying to deliver as many vaccines as possible during December via the invitation booking system, there is a possibility that we may have some last minute changes to availability.

Due to a number of appointments becoming available at short notice, there is a drop-in session TODAY (Monday 20th December) at the Newport Centre until 2:30pm this afternoon.

This will be for first doses aged 12+, second doses aged 18+ (it must be at least 8 weeks from your first dose) and Boosters (over 30s).

There will be no changes to collection days over the Christmas period, the service will be running as normal.

On Saturday 18th December we will be carrying out a system upgrade at Nevill Hall Hospital which will require a system wide outage from 06:00 to 08:00hrs. During this time the site will have no access to Networks, Telephony or Wifi. 

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has made a plea to local residents, asking them to wait to receive their booster vaccination and NOT to contact the Health Board for details of their appointment.

We're celebrating the TENTH anniversary of the opening of Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr this week, as the hospital marks a decade of providing first-class care to local people.

Welsh Government continues to report Alert Level 0 for the general population. However, in line with national guidance COVID measures remain in place on healthcare premises in order to protect extremely vulnerable patients. This includes social distancing and the use of facemasks.

Are you aged 16 years and above, or has it been 8 weeks since your first dose? You can now walk in to any of our vaccination clinics to receive your vaccination.

This week is blood pressure awareness week and we are shining a light on blood pressure, what it is, and some of the things that we can do to help keep our blood pressure in a healthy range. 

We are expecting a high number of births over the Bank Holiday weekend and we are currently experiencing staff shortages across a number of our hospitals.

NHS services are currently affected by an international shortage of blood collection tubes used for taking some blood samples (blood tests).

Please note that the Mass Vaccination Booking Centre line will be operating at the slightly reduced hours of 10:00am - 4:00pm on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August only.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s new Specialist and Critical Care Centre, The Grange University Hospital, was officially opened today by Rt Hon Mark Drakeford, MS First Minister of Wales.

AstraZeneca vaccine walk-in clinics for second doses only for anyone who received their first dose on or before 6th July 2021.

From Monday 23rd August until Thursday 26th August there will be some structural work being undertaken in the Children’s Emergency Assessment Unit at The Grange University Hospital.

We are currently experiencing some faults on the telephone lines for the Vaccination Booking Line and some lines to our Referral and Booking team.

A number of our services are now offering virtual appointments to allow our patients to attend pre-arranged appointments using a video call, rather than attending in person.

Did you know that smoking cessation services can be accessed via your local pharmacy? Over the last year, there were three pharmacies within our Health Board area who were extremely proactive in working with smokers to help them quit.

Following today’s announcement and recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisations regarding the vaccination of all those aged 16 and 17 years old, we would like to assure our residents that we will be contacting all those eligible for vaccination to offer an appointment over the next few weeks.

Newport NCN and The University of South Wales are looking to recruit people who are eligible for one of the cancer screening programmes (Breast, Bowel and Cervical screening).

Following the JCVI announcement earlier this week, those within twelve weeks of turning 18 years old are now eligible to be offered the COVID-19 vaccine.

From 26^th July 2021, there will be the opportunity for some patients within the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area to be admitted to a community hospital rather than one of our enhanced general local hospitals.

It’s been one year since Improvement Cymru (Public Health Wales) produced a free online self-help video course available to everyone in Wales over the age of 16.  The ACTivate Your Life course has helped people take greater control so that day-to-day life has become less stressful and more enjoyable.

Following the recent announcement and recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisations regarding the approval of the COVID-19 vaccination of those aged between 12 and 17 years, who are at higher risk from COVID-19 and all those within twelve weeks of turning 18 years old will now be eligible to receive the vaccine.

A new project has been set up to support community transport to hospitals and other NHS premises across the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area.

We are pleased to report that, following our Public Engagement on Adult Mental Health Services in our Health Board area, we have carried out an analysis on responses and all comments submitted. 

With the increasing number of cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant across Wales, including the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area, we are reminding people that if they have any symptoms of Covid-19 that they must book a Covid-19 test with the Health Board.

The Health Board was delighted to host a visit from the new Minister for Health and Social Care, Eluned Morgan, this week. The minister visited Newport Velodrome to hear about our post COVID recovery services.

Diabetes Week is here! And this year, we're telling #DiabetesStories from all corners of the UK. We're looking back on an extraordinary year and looking forward to what’s to come, and, above all celebrating the incredible diabetes community.

We will be holding walk-in vaccination clinics in the Newport and Ebbw Vale areas on Saturday 26th June.

The Health Board has recently witnessed an increase in patients receiving visitors outside in the hospital grounds.

Tuesday 15th June marks International Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, Jeff Cuthbert is working with partners to help professionals working in communities recognise the signs and behaviours of elder abuse.

We have carefully considered our approach to Hospital Visiting and following a pilot in Nevill Hall Hospital, we have now extended visiting to more hospitals including The Grange University Hospital, Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, The Royal Gwent Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, together with continued visiting at Nevill Hall Hospital.

A key priority this year has been the identifying and supporting carers through primary care health services. With the lockdown restrictions this has meant thinking more strategically about how we best provide responsive support.

Last week, Surgeons and Theatre staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital were fortunate to have the opportunity to test-drive a state-of-the-art Operative Robot.

Please note that the vaccination booking centre line will be operating from 7:00am - 6:00pm instead of the usual 7:00am - 7:00pm for Thursday 10th June only.

Due to a planned fire-drill at the Vaccination Booking Centre, there will be minor disruption to the service for approximately 10 – 15 minutes. Unfortunately, as the original timescale has been delayed we're unable to specify the time this will take place.  

We are still experiencing minor technical issues with our vaccination booking line.

This week is Carers Week 7th – 13th June across the UK. People and organisations across Gwent are coming together to make a pledge to unpaid carers.

The Gwent Carers Regional Partnership Board is proud to support the launch of its Young Carers book ‘It’s cool to care’, in recognition of Carers week, which takes place between 7th and 13th June 2021.

This consultation provides an opportunity to help shape pharmaceutical services in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and make sure that they are meeting the needs of local people.

Twenty years ago today on 1st June 2001, we were fortunate enough to welcome the first ever cohort of Filipino Nurses to our Health Board.

We are extremely proud to announce that we have now hit the milestone of administering 600,000 vaccinations (combination of first and second doses)!

Yesterday (Thursday 27th May), we had the absolute pleasure of the Year 5 class from St Andrew’s Primary School, Newport visiting the Royal Gwent Hospital to present our nurses with gifts of thanks for all the hard work they have carried out over the last year.

The previous network problems at Risca Health Centre have now been rectified and the telephone lines are now back in service.

The Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden is taking part in the UK wide “Have a Grow” day on Saturday 5th June.

There has been a network failure at Risca Health Centre this afternoon which has resulted in the Podiatry Booking Centre lines becoming unavailable.

Next month, we will be shining a spotlight on Cancer services within our Health Board.

We are currently experiencing significant issues with our vaccination booking line.

Dementia Action Week is a national event that sees organisations and the public coming together to take action to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.

The Friends of ABUHB (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) Breast Unit was set up in 2018 with the aim of raising £200k towards the new unit, which is due to open at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in late 2021.

The Welsh Blood Service needs to collect over 350 donations of blood every day and demand has risen steadily over the last 10 years as medical techniques become evermore sophisticated.

This week 17th- 23rd May 2021 we are pledging to 'Think Insulin' as part of Insulin Safety Week 2021. Our Diabetes Specialist Teams across the Health Board are helping to raise awareness of the importance of reducing insulin errors in people living with Diabetes.

It is well known that what we eat impacts our mental health as well as our physical health.

Spring HIV Testing week is from 14th - 21st May 2021. This campaign organised by Fast Track Cities Cardiff encourages partner organisations in community, health care and policy institutions throughout Wales to unite to increase testing efforts and promote awareness of the benefits of earlier hepatitis and HIV testing.

If you are 40 years and older and have not received your first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, please come along the drop in clinic on 22nd May. No appointment necessary.

Today (Friday 7th May) the JCVI have announced that those under 40 years (with no clinical risk factors) should be offered an alternative vaccine to Oxford AstraZeneca.

As the Health Board looks to expand the role of Physician Associates (PAs), last week colleagues from St Georges University Teaching Hospital in London took time to virtually meet with our Surgical Leads to discuss the benefits that the PA role can bring to front-door and elective surgical services.

The Health Board is running a campaign in local pubs, clubs and taxi premises to urge people to use the right service, or attend the correct hospital for their needs, when they are unwell or injured.

A new online platform dedicated to supporting families through the stages of maternity and child health development, in partnership with local health professionals, launches today (date) in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area.

Cindy Sulit, a much loved Nurse at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, has this week returned to her role in the Emergency Department almost a year after she became critically ill with Covid-19.

After contracting Covid-19, Cindy’s condition deteriorated rapidly and she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and put on a ventilator for over three weeks.

It is one year since Scott Howells, our first Covid-19 patient, was put on a ventilator in the Royal Gwent Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. He was in hospital for a total of eight weeks.

Most patients can’t wait to get home from hospital and the sooner the better. This isn’t just because it’s where they want to be, it’s also better for recovery once acute hospital care is no longer needed.

The Health Board's licence to occupy the Whiteheads car park expires on Sunday 28 February 2021, and those attending the hospital will no longer be able to utilise this car parking facility with effect from 1 March 2021. 

The Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) have issued a joint statement to confirm there is “no evidence to suggest that Covid-19 vaccines will affect fertility”. 

Throughout the pandemic, the groundswell of support for the NHS that we have witnessed, came to be symbolised by the rainbows that have filled our streets. 

The Outpatient Referral & Booking Centre has  now reverted  to their normal opening hours.  With immediate effect they will be open from Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 6:00pm and Saturday mornings 8:00am - 12:00noon.

Last week, we reached the milestone of 100,000 vaccinations and have now vaccinated a total of 111,443 people across our Health Board. A huge thank you to all those who have attended their vaccination

The Covid-19 Pandemic has resulted in the biggest vaccination programme we’ve seen in our lifetime. This has, of course, brought about many challenges. However, it has also offered many opportunities that wouldn’t usually arise.

We are incredibly delighted to announce the fantastic news that we have given over 100,000 vaccinations.

On the website, you’ll find resources, courses, local opportunities to maintain and improve your mental and physical health. There’s also important information about getting help for you or someone you know.

A COVID recovery app was launched on Wednesday 20th January  as part of wider support on offer for people experiencing the longer term effects of coronavirus.

Please note that the Brynmawr - Gilwern road closure planned for this weekend has been postponed to Saturday 6th - Monday 8th February

Across our Health Board we have now vaccinated a total of 25,877 people.

Residents from 72 of the 95 care homes for older adults within the health board area have been offered the vaccination, with staff in 90% of our older adult care homes being offered the vaccine. We have vaccinated 7,777 80 years and over and 6,500+ frontline health staff.

We are pleased to announce that from today, 13th January 2021, we will have Telephonists at each of our main hospital sites, who will serve as a point of contact for callers enquiring for updates on relatives. We are aware of the significant difficulties the public are experiencing when trying to contact our wards during these very challenging times.

Since the launch of the Covid vaccine, the team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have been working tirelessly on the biggest vaccination programme we’ve seen in our lifetime. So far across Gwent we have vaccinated over 15,000 people.

In 2020 we’ve all made great sacrifices to protect ourselves, family, friends and the NHS from Covid 19. That protection is continuing and as part of it we are in the process of vaccinating our wonderful nation.

Congratulations to Professor Alka Surajprakash Ahuja and Professor Tamas Szakmany who have both received awards in the New Year Honours list 2021.

We are delighted with the news this morning that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine has now been approved for use. As a Health Board we have made good progress on our vaccination programme since it began on the 8^th December and this new vaccine will help us accelerate our vaccination programme.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) following a global trial, in which Welsh participants and healthcare professionals played a key role.

Due to a ‘concerning’ rise in COVID-19 cases in the Gwent area, the Health Board is writing an open letter to residents of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. The letter asks residents to follow the new level 4 restrictions and minimise the number of people that they see over the festive season to help slow the spread of the virus.

There will be changes to the collection of patient sharps boxes and clinical waste bags over the Christmas period

We are delighted to be working in partnership with Torfaen Leisure Trust, who have been really supportive in helping us set up the first Mass Vaccination Centre in Gwent, which has enabled us to successfully roll-out the first doses of the Covid vaccine.

A successful initiative by Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group to make the admission into hospital more efficient is being launched today in Monmouthshire.

Please note that due to high levels of staff sickness, the Midwife-led birth centres at the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals will close temporarily from today (17th December 2020) until 4th January 2021.

From Monday 14th December we will be making changes to some of our services. This decision has not been made lightly, however, the increasing transmission of COVID-19 within our communities, together with the usual winter demand on our emergency care is having a significant impact on our ability to provide normal services.

The day has finally arrived as Gwent starts on its road to recovery. Wales was the first country in the world to receive supplies of the vaccine last week, and today a huge team of healthcare professionals have become one of the first to start vaccinating the Gwent population, protecting people against coronavirus.

Patients who have been newly referred to a specialty this year and who are on an outpatient waiting list may receive a text message from the Health Board as follows:

Monday 7th December

Today, Monday 7^th December, we as a Health Board are supporting the #maegenihawl Welsh Language Rights Day, where we are promoting some of the Welsh language services that we offer to our patients and staff as part of their Welsh Language Rights.

There are a number of NHS staff who have experienced the devastating effects of Covid-19. For example, some have contracted the virus and needed mechanical ventilation, some have been unable to visit relatives in hospital and some staff have lost family members, not being with them when they were dying, as visiting restrictions at that time did not allow it.

The Outpatient Referral & Booking Centre have made temporary changes to their opening hours.  With immediate effect we will be closed on Saturdays, however will continue to be available Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm.

The Emergency Department remains very busy at The Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is opening a number of mobile COVID-19 testing units across Torfaen.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is extending the opening of its mobile COVID-19 testing units in Blaenau Gwent.

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, a decision was made on patient safety grounds in March this year to relocate the haematology service from the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall hospitals to Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Ystrad Mynach. 

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is opening a temporary COVID-19 testing unit in Rhymney, Caerphilly, from Tuesday 24 November.

Over ££14,000 was raised as part of the "Turn Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) Pink "campaign in Breast Cancer Awareness month.

We are treating an increasing number of patients with COVID-19 in our hospitals. Our Emergency Departments at Nevill Hall Hospital and the Royal Gwent Hospital are under significant pressure with the number of patients attending, both with COVID and non COVID.

A temporary mobile testing unit at the Old Mill Car Park, Trosnant, Pontypool, NP4 8AT, has opened on Wednesday 30th September.

This new mobile unit has been opened in response to a rising rate of Coronavirus cases, and will provide a ‘walk up’ testing service to residents of Torfaen, by appointment only.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are very grateful to Bellway Homes for donating £300 towards a rainbow mural in the children’s waiting area at Caldicot Health Centre.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has announced the opening of a new testing centre in New Tredegar in Caerphilly Borough.

This new mobile unit will provide a testing service to residents in the north of Caerphilly Borough. It is located at the car park, New Tredegar Business Park, White Rose Way, NP24 6BH and you must book an appointment to attend for a test.

Hospitals in Wales are to benefit from a new high-tech digital-monitoring system for seriously ill people in Intensive Care Units. 

The new Grange University Hospital in Llanfrechfa, which is scheduled for early opening in November 2020, will be the first to adopt the new system in summer 2021. Planned roll out will then follow to all NHS Wales Intensive Care Units.

Members of the public in Newport are being advised of the need to be vigilant for the symptoms of Coronavirus, and of the vital need to stick to social distancing guidelines, as a rise in cases there causes concern.

In the last week, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has seen a significant rise in positive COVID-19 cases within the community, investigations have indicated that a lack of social distancing in all age groups, in a range of different locations, has contributed to the spread of the virus.

On Thursday 10^th September, Laing O’Rourke, the main contractors for The Grange University Hospital, donated a shipping container to the 'Woodshed', based at St. Cadoc’s Hospital.

The Woodshed is a Mental Health Woodwork Therapy project for Mental Health patients at the hospital.

On Thursday 10th September 2020, Dr Sarah Aitken and Dr David Hepburn took part in a Live Question and Answer session to discuss how the people of Gwent could all help to prevent a second wave of Covid-19.

Following the lockdown in Caerphilly, for residents who were shielding prior to 16th of August and remain on the Shielding Patient List, there is no change to the advice from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is supporting the National Cycle to Work Day which returns on Thursday 6th August with a twist.

We are currently going through unprecedented times and we need to ensure that we have blood and platelet products to treat patients in need.

From 30 July, people who have tested positive for coronavirus will have to self-isolate for 10 days instead of 7 days. The 10 day period starts from the day symptoms start, or if asymptomatic from the day a test is taken.  As before a test should be arranged within 5 days of symptoms starting. This will also apply to health and social care workers.

NHS Wales have launched three new self-management Apps for healthcare professionals and patients who suffer from Asthma and COPD.

The Health Board has always supported the annual PRIDE March through the streets of Cardiff to show our support for our LGBT+ community and staff, but as this year this isn’t possible due to the Pandemic we wanted to let you know that our PRIDE celebrations will be moving online.

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday each June, landing on the 27th of June in 2020. The day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community; from veterans to currently serving troops, service families and cadets.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has established a new service to help COVID-19 patients who had been ventilated in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Respiratory High Dependency Unit (HDU).

The Royal Gwent Hospital’s Respiratory Team set up this unique collaborative Rehabilitation Programme to support and aid the recovery of formerly ventilated COVID-19 patients post discharge.
