12/02/2024 Raising Awareness of Bronchiolitis: A Common Respiratory Infection in Young Children 

Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection, especially in young children, characterised by inflammation and congestion in the small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs. This condition is primarily caused by viral infections such as RSV, common cold and flu.

Welsh is a language for everyone, and everyone is welcome to use their Cymraeg with us.

We're supporting the Welsh Language Commissioner's Office's'Defnyddia dy Gymraeg' (Use your Welsh) campaign, which runs between 25th November and 9th December 2024 and encourages people to use welsh in their everyday lives.

On Monday, voices from across the Health Board came together in the Main Restaurant at the Royal Gwent Hospital on their lunch break, forming the ABUHB John Lewis choir. Using the custom John Lewis-inspired TikTok filter, our Communications team captured the group’s rendition of Sonnet. Their performance was met with enthusiastic applause from onlookers in the canteen, creating a lovely moment that embodied the spirit of the season.

Heart failure does not mean your heart has stopped working, it means that the heart is unable to pump blood and oxygen around the body properly. It usually happens because the heart has become too weak or stiff. It means it needs some support to help it work better. Heart failure is a long-term condition that tends to get gradually worse over time. It cannot usually be cured, but the symptoms can often be controlled for many years.

01/29/2024 'Sip Til Send' - New Fasting Guidance allowing Patients to Sip Water before Surgery or Procedure Launched

Patients are often fasted for excessive periods prior to surgery, and this results in them feeling uncomfortable, anxious and having worse outcomes. Evidence shows that small volumes of water are beneficial and rapidly emptied from the stomach.

Drinking water before theatre means less headaches and less chance of nausea post operatively. Drinking water will make you feel better before AND after surgery.

The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre is built on the former site of where the Tredegar General Hospital once stood and is located in the hometown of Aneurin Bevan, the founder of the NHS.

11/29/2023 Mouth Cancer Action Month – George's Story

Three years ago, when George was 82 years old, he noticed a small white patch at the back of his tongue that was very sore.

After visiting his dentist and being referred to a specialist, a biopsy and scan confirmed that George had mouth cancer. Shortly after, he received an operation to remove some of his lymph nodes, which was successful and required no further treatment. George was referred, diagnosed, treated and declared cancer free within three months!

Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages across a wide range of sectors including schools, hospitals, community settings and care homes. Occupational Therapy supports people experiencing short or long-term physical, mental health, environment or social difficulties. This may include difficulties with every-day tasks such as getting around the home as well as difficulties participating in hobbies, school and work.

08/31/2023 'Patch Party' held by Orthoptists at Royal Gwent Hospital!

Orthoptists at ABUHB Royal Gwent Hospital held a 'Patch Party' on the 18th August! The party was to coincide with NHS75 celebrations.  They were slightly late to the party as they had to wait for school holidays in order to celebrate with the children!

The aim of the party was to encourage young patients who are currently undergoing treatment for a 'lazy eye' – medically known as Amblyopia.

Today we celebrated the unveiling of four new organ donation storyboards at The Grange University Hospital. The boards contain two stories from organ donation recipients; David Fellowes and Angharad Rhodes, and two from the families of two organ donors; Jamie Clayden and Sandra Beale. The purpose of the storyboards is to raise awareness and start conversations with loved ones about organ donation.

It’s no secret that as we age, our ability to carry out everyday activities may decrease. A contributory factor may be a change in hearing. The impact of hearing loss is often underrated. When hearing loss occurs, some people may withdraw from everyday conversations, leading to the possibility of isolation. Our brains need stimulation from talking to others. Experts show that there can be a link between hearing loss and dementia. Research suggests that by managing hearing loss with hearing aids, the risk of dementia can be reduced.

Flu is on the rise in Gwent- in the last week we have seen nearly a 50% increase in flu cases across our communities, and large increase in the number people being admitted to hospital with severe flu. 11/08/2022 New Child-friendly CT Scanner at The Grange University Hospital

The Radiology team at The Grange University Hospital have worked hard to create a child-friendly CT scanner. A computed tomography (CT) scan is a medical imaging technique that is used to gain detailed internal images of the body. To do this, the patient must go through a doughnut-shaped machine and lay very still for a few minutes. For many children, and adults, this can be an intimidating process which will often lead to the patient being sedated before entering the scanner. However, with the help of our suppliers at Canon, the Radiology team have been able to create a child-friendly CT scanner which has been covered in artwork of Ferdinand the Fox and Betty the Bunny.

We are pleased to have been able to reduce visiting restrictions across our hospital sites, however we would like to remind our residents that patients attending the Emergency Department may only bring one person to accompany them. Urgent medical and health advice is now available across Wales 24 hours a day, seven days a week, following the successful rollout of the 111 helpline to all health board areas.

03/29/2022 Urgent Message Regarding The Grange University Hospital

The Health Board is under sustained and unprecedented pressure. Despite actions to try to stabilise our services, today we have had to declare a state of ‘business continuity’.

Our Emergency Department at The Grange University Hospital is extremely busy, and we have seen a record number of attendances, and waits to see a doctor, in some cases, are greater than 14 hours where the patient’s condition isn’t life threatening. We have very few beds available across our hospitals to accommodate patients requiring admission.

01/07/2022 Hospital Visiting Statement- 9th January 2022

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board appreciates how important it is for patients and their loved ones to see each other whilst they are receiving care in hospital. We need to carefully balance this with the risk to patients, family members and staff that visiting brings whilst Covid is so rife in the community.

Due to the increasing challenges faced as a result of the new Omicron variant and in order to protect the safety of patients and staff, the Health Board will now be operating essential-only visiting from Monday 10th January 2022.

01/06/2022 Road closure near General Offices, Ebbw Vale

Please note that from 4 January until 1 July 2022, a section of road will be closed near our vaccination centre at General Offices in Ebbw Vale.

The town’s 200 year old Big Arch is undergoing restoration, therefore a section of Steel Works Road (B4485) that passes under the bridge will be closed, both ways, from Lime Avenue to Ebbw Vale Football Club.

Lateral flow tests can be used to check for COVID-19 by anyone who does not have symptoms. The tests are free and can be collected from most pharmacies or a local collection point.

You can also order online for home delivery. You can order 1 home testing kit (7 tests) at a time. Delivery takes 1 to 2 days.

Cindy Sulit, a much loved Nurse at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, has this week returned to her role in the Emergency Department almost a year after she became critically ill with Covid-19.

Across our Health Board we have now vaccinated a total of 25,877 people.

Residents from 72 of the 95 care homes for older adults within the health board area have been offered the vaccination, with staff in 90% of our older adult care homes being offered the vaccine. We have vaccinated 7,777 80 years and over and 6,500+ frontline health staff.

A temporary mobile testing unit at the Old Mill Car Park, Trosnant, Pontypool, NP4 8AT, has opened on Wednesday 30th September.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has announced the opening of a new testing centre in New Tredegar in Caerphilly Borough.

This new mobile unit will provide a testing service to residents in the north of Caerphilly Borough. It is located at the car park, New Tredegar Business Park, White Rose Way, NP24 6BH and you must book an appointment to attend for a test.

09/15/2020 Intensive Care Unit at The Grange University Hospital to Become First in Wales to Use New NHS Wales £13 Million Technology Investment

Hospitals in Wales are to benefit from a new high-tech digital-monitoring system for seriously ill people in Intensive Care Units. 

The new Grange University Hospital in Llanfrechfa, which is scheduled for early opening in November 2020, will be the first to adopt the new system in summer 2021. Planned roll out will then follow to all NHS Wales Intensive Care Units.

07/30/2020 IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Changes to isolation period for Covid-19 - Updated 30 July 2020

From 30 July, people who have tested positive for coronavirus will have to self-isolate for 10 days instead of 7 days. The 10 day period starts from the day symptoms start, or if asymptomatic from the day a test is taken.  As before a test should be arranged within 5 days of symptoms starting. This will also apply to health and social care workers.

<br> 06/01/2020 Contact Tracing starts in Gwent

In response to the Welsh Government’s Test, Trace, Protect strategy, partners including Public Health Wales, the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and the five Local Authorities in Gwent have joined forces to start contact tracing in Gwent and the service will go live on Monday June 1.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that our 600th patient has recovered from Coronavirus! This means that 600 of our Coronavirus patients have now become well enough to leave our Hospitals in Gwent and go home to their families.
