A Fond Farewell to Shilpa After Nearly Four Decades Serving Her Community
After nearly 38 years serving the Thornhill community in Cwmbran, pharmacist and Shil pharmacy owner Shilpa Desai has retired.
Fresh from qualifying as a pharmacist, Shilpa was just 26 years old when local GP Dr Ramesh Sharma approached her about opening a pharmacy near his practice. At the time, Thornhill had no pharmacy, and local residents were keen to see one established, with one patient even starting a petition.
Taking on the challenge meant navigating planning permissions, securing finance, finding land, appointing builders and sourcing suppliers, a daunting task for a newly qualified pharmacist.
Building work began in May 1988 and, just five months later, Shil pharmacy opened its doors to the community.
Looking back, Shilpa describes the pharmacy as "my baby".
"It's difficult to let it go, but all good things must come to an end," she says.
Over almost four decades, she has built lasting relationships with patients and families, many of whom have remained loyal to the pharmacy even after moving away from the area.
"I've seen babies grow up and then bring in children of their own. It's always felt like a community. I know so many families and I've loved hearing about what's happening in their lives. I'll miss the patients the most."
Her decision to retire comes as she looks forward to spending more time with her 92-year-old father who has moved in with her. Retirement will also bring opportunities for new adventures. One trip already firmly in the diary is a visit to India to celebrate Diwali with family and friends.
“I was five when my parents moved to this country and, because of school, university and then opening the pharmacy, I’ve never had the chance to spend Diwali in India. I’m really looking forward to experiencing that this November and visiting friend and family there.
Reflecting on her career, Shilpa said: "It's been an eventful journey and I've enjoyed every milestone along the way. It's been a privilege to serve this community.
"To my customers and patients, thank you for all your support over the years. I'm going to miss each and every one of you, but now feels like the right time for a new chapter."
