Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is celebrating after being recognised at the NHS Wales Awards 2025.

NHS Wales Efficient Care Award
Our Nevill Hall Day Surgery Unit introduced a new way of working in theatres to speed up operations and reduce waiting lists after the pandemic. This approach means quicker turnaround times, better patient outcomes, and digital pre-op checks now used across the Health Board.

NHS Wales Leadership Award
The project “Let The First Fragility Fracture be the Last!” helps prevent repeat fractures caused by osteoporosis. By using automated scans and teamwork across services, we’ve boosted early detection from 23% to 70%. This model is now being rolled out across Wales, making us the first UK nation to offer universal fracture prevention services.

NHS Wales Learning & Research Award
GO Wales: Geniculate Artery Embolisation for Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis Pain in Wales
Our GO Wales team tested a new, less invasive treatment for knee arthritis called geniculate artery embolisation (GAE). Patients reported less pain and better movement, with no major side effects. This work is paving the way for larger trials and could offer an alternative to knee replacement surgery.
This year’s event, held in Cardiff, focused not only on celebration but also on learning and collaboration.
Finalists had the opportunity to participate in a poster marketplace and lightning talks, proudly sharing their work and insights with colleagues from across NHS Wales and highlighting how great ideas can spread and scale across the system.
