Award created in memory of beloved staff member

Wednesday 3rd June 2026

Earlier this year, the Bevan Commission presented the ‘Dr Daryl Harris’ award to two participants in the 9th Cohort of the Bevan Exemplar Programme.

The award was made in memory of Dr Daryl Harris, Consultant Clinical Psychologist (pictured right), who was a Bevan Commission Clinical Fellow, and made a significant impact on many colleagues across Wales with his work in co-producing the ABUHB Niwrostiwt - A Neuro Recovery College, before passing away in 2025.

The recipients of the Dr Daryl Harris award were:

  • Advanced Physiotherapist Chris Lambert of Swansea Bay University Health Board, for his role in developing the Orthopaedic Waiting List Initiative (OWLI), and

  • Clinical Psychologist Dr Bethan Lloyd of Hywel Dda University Health Board, for developing the Women's Health Psychology Service.

Daryl's wife, sons, and father attended the ceremony at the Senedd, and his brother Richard presented the award. The Bevan Commission explained the reasons for creating the award:

"This award is created in memory of our colleague and friend, Daryl Harris, whose passion for the NHS and unwavering belief that things can be better inspired everyone who worked with him.

He had a way of cutting through the noise, reminding us why we’re here, and pushing - always gently, but firmly - for the changes that mattered most for patients and staff.

This award recognises someone who brings that same spirit to their work, who cares deeply, refuses to give up, and keeps going even when the system makes it hard; someone who sees what isn’t working and does something about it; who shows the quiet persistence, kindness and determination that Daryl Harris lived every day"

Dr Helen Howson introduced the award on the day and referenced a favourite piece of Daryl's work:  https://bevancommission.org/getting-under-the-bonnet-of-prudent-healthcare/

The award ceremony was a fitting gesture for a wonderful person who reminded us every day of the true purpose of Aneurin Bevan.
