Richard Wheeler, an OT Tech from the Upper Monmouthshire Community Mental Health Team, started his parkrun journey six years ago when he saw a TV programme. At the time, he was nearly 14 stone, smoking 30 cigarettes a day, and feeling sluggish. He decided to give parkrun a go and hasn’t looked back. Today, Richard has completed over 200 parkruns, quit smoking, lost weight, and says he’s the fittest and happiest he’s ever been.
“parkrun is more than just a run - it’s a community, a chance to connect, and a proven way to improve your mood, reduce stress, and feel part of something positive”.
“Running helps clear my mind of worries and stresses. My sleep is better, my mood is better, so what’s not to love? Aberbeeg parkrun is the friendliest in Wales (if not the world)!” says Richard.
Richard’s advice? “Don’t worry about your pace - it’s quicker than sitting on the sofa” Whether you walk, jog, run, or volunteer, parkrun offers a sense of belonging and purpose. Plus, it’s free, fun, and sometimes there’s cake!
