GP celebrates 50 years of service to the NHS

A Newport GP who has dedicated his career to caring for local communities is celebrating an extraordinary milestone this week, marking 50 years of service to the NHS.

Dr Ramesh Kumar Sharma will complete 50 years of NHS service at the end of this week, having spent five decades supporting patients across Gwent with compassion, dedication and professionalism.

Dr Sharma qualified in medicine at Patna Medical College in 1974 before becoming fully registered to practise in the UK in September 1975. He went on to establish himself as a much-loved GP in Cwmbran, running his own practice at Fairwater Surgery for many years and caring for generations of local families.

Today, he continues to serve patients at St Paul’s Clinic in Newport, remaining as committed to patient care as ever.

Throughout his career, Dr Sharma has earned a reputation for his kindness, patience and unwavering focus on the needs of his patients. Colleagues describe him as a GP who always takes the time to listen, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected and supported.

His calm and reassuring manner has helped countless people through difficult times, while his dedication to medicine and to the communities he serves has never diminished.

For Dr Sharma, general practice has been far more than a profession. Caring for others has been at the centre of everything he has done throughout his career, and even after 50 years of service, he continues to treat every patient with the same warmth, dignity and respect that have defined his working life.

Reaching half a century of NHS service is a remarkable achievement in itself. To do so while continuing to see patients and remaining so highly regarded by colleagues and the communities he serves makes the milestone even more special.

As Dr Sharma marks 50 years in the NHS, colleagues, patients and friends are joining together to celebrate an exceptional career and to thank him for his outstanding contribution to healthcare in Gwent.
