This summer, children across Gwent have been keeping active and learning valuable life skills during their school break. We visited Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili, where one of our popular ‘Food and Fun’ days was in full swing. Matt, a nutritionist from our Dietetics Public Health Team, was on hand to support the initiative.
Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili is among 42 schools in Gwent that have been trained by our Public Health team in the 'Nutrition Skills for Life' course. With this training, school staff have been able to organise ‘Food and Fun’ days during the holidays, where children engage in activities that teach them about food groups, the importance of staying active, and making healthy food choices from a young age.
Matt, Dietetics Public Health Nutritionist said that it was “great to see the skills from the course being put into practice with the children” and that “the key thing is to see the behaviour changes in healthier choices being taken home”.
Thousands of children have been educated over the summer on how to eat healthily, and the positive impact of these 'Food and Fun' days is being felt at home too. Gemma, a mother of two, shared that her youngest daughter is now "more open to trying new foods and has started choosing healthier options" since attending the program.
