Jennifer, from Newport, attended the Emergency Department after becoming concerned about symptoms including shortness of breath, heart palpitations and tightness in her chest.
Having recently recovered from pneumonia, Jennifer initially thought her symptoms were related to that illness. After contacting NHS 111 for advice, she was encouraged to come to hospital to be checked over.
"I'd had pneumonia three weeks ago, so I assumed everything was connected to that," said Jennifer. "But after having a CT scan, they discovered a blood clot, which is why I was referred to the Respiratory Ambulatory Care Unit (RACU)."
Jennifer arrived at the hospital at around 1.15am and says she felt reassured by the care she received throughout her stay.
"Since arriving, I've had blood tests, IV fluids, a chest X-ray and a CT scan," she said. "I was also seen by a doctor in the early hours of the morning, so I felt like things were moving forward."
Although she expected there might be a longer wait, Jennifer was pleasantly surprised by how quickly she was seen for key tests and assessments.
"When they told me there would be about an hour's wait, I was actually seen within 30 minutes. I've been very well looked after."
After being transferred to RACU, Jennifer was assessed almost immediately.
"I'd only been on the unit for around 30 minutes and I'd already had an ECG and been seen by a doctor," she said.
Jennifer was particularly grateful for the clear communication from the team caring for her.
"The doctor was very thorough. He asked lots of questions about my medical history and family history and explained exactly what the next steps would be. They've got a few more tests to do so they can put the right plan in place and make sure I'm on the correct medication."
Reflecting on her overall experience, Jennifer praised the staff for their professionalism and compassion.
"I've always been well looked after here. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and there's always somebody around if I need to ask a question or if I need anything at all.
"Considering how stretched services are and how many departments the staff have to look after, I don't think the waiting times are bad. Everyone has been kind, supportive and kept me informed. Overall, I'm very pleased with the treatment I've received."
