On August 30th, local artist Nathan Wyburn revealed his latest creation at The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre in Tredegar. The centrepiece, now prominently displayed at the centre’s main entrance, is a portrait of NHS founder and local hero, Aneurin Bevan. This artwork is uniquely crafted using images that trace the rich history of Tredegar.
Nathan Wyburn commented:
“There is so much involved in this piece, I visited a lot of local schools and spoke to local historians. There’s everything from explaining the origin of the name of Tredegar, to the local industries, cholera outbreak, to current relevant and local people. It encapsulates the entire history of Tredegar in one image.”
In addition to the portrait, Nathan also designed the Aneurin Bevan Rose sculpture located in the wellbeing garden of the centre. This steel rose emerges from rubble made of local materials, symbolizing the rise of the NHS from the region’s industrial past. “This sculpture depicts the beauty growing through the darkness,” Wyburn explained. “It’s constructed of a steel rose bursting through the rubble of old Tredegar and Ebbw Vale-made bricks, coal, shovels, and chains.”
Nathan expressed his pride in contributing to the centre, noting his belief in the therapeutic power of art. “I really believe in arts for health and wellbeing, so hopefully it’ll have a positive impact on your journey as you visit this building,” he said. “I am so proud and honoured as a local boy to have been asked to produce this artwork.”
Nicola Prygodzicz, Chief Executive of the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, praised the installation,
“We are delighted with the artwork that Nathan has created for The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre in Tredegar,” she said. “It is an important and impressive feature of the building which encapsulates the heritage of Tredegar.”
The Bevan Health & Wellbeing Centre provides a range of primary care services, bringing essential healthcare closer to home for the local community.
