New Emergency Department Waiting Area Open – The Grange University Hospital

Wednesday 17th December 2025

We are delighted to share that Phase 1 of the Emergency Department (ED) extension at The Grange University Hospital has officially opened today (Wednesday 17th December 2025).

This new development provides:

  • A larger, more comfortable waiting area for patients and families
  • Additional assessment capacity to help us manage demand more effectively
  • An improved environment designed to enhance patient experience and support our staff

Over the coming days, our teams will be working hard to transition smoothly into the new space. While this change is taking place, there may be some adjustments to patient flow in the department. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we complete this important step forward.

This extension marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving urgent and emergency care for our community.

We would like to thank everyone involved in this project, including our Emergency Department staff, for their dedication, professionalism, and flexibility throughout this project. Their hard work has made this improvement possible.

We look forward to welcoming patients and visitors into the new waiting area.

Is the Emergency Department (ED) the right place for you?

The Grange University Hospital treats patients with life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Our Emergency Department is extremely busy at the moment due to winter illnesses and is under great pressure.

We currently have very long waiting times if your illness or injury is not life-threatening. There are other options available to you (and you are likely to be seen much quicker) – call 111 for FREE while you are waiting to see if there is a more appropriate option for you.

If a friend or relative is taking you to the Emergency Department, please remind them to drop off at the ED entrance and park in the main carpark.

Keeping everyone safe

We are currently seeing high numbers of flu and other winter illnesses, and we want to protect our patients, visitors, and staff from these infections.

To help keep everyone safe and well, please:

✅ Wear a mask while on our hospital sites

✅ Wash your hands regularly

✅ Have a maximum of 1 family member, or friend, with you to offer support.
