Parents urged to add eye tests, dental checks and vaccinations to their back-to-school checklist

Parents and carers across Gwent are being encouraged to make sure their children are ready for the new school year by checking off three important health essentials: an eye test, a dental check-up and up-to-date vaccinations.

As families prepare for the return to the classroom, health professionals at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are reminding parents that good health plays an important role in helping children learn, develop and thrive at school.

Many children may not realise they have problems with their vision, making regular eye tests an important part of their overall health. Good eyesight can have a significant impact on reading, learning and classroom confidence.

Parents are also encouraged to ensure their child has attended a recent dental check-up. Regular dental visits can help prevent tooth decay and identify any issues early, helping children maintain healthy smiles and avoid unnecessary discomfort.

Eye checks for children are free for all children under 16 years old and NHS dental treatment is free for children under 18 years old.

Checking that children are up to date with their routine vaccinations is another important step. Vaccinations help protect children from serious diseases and reduce the risk of infections spreading in schools and communities.

Tracy Daszkiewicz, Executive Director of Public Health at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board says,

"Back-to-school preparations often focus on uniforms, stationery and schedules, but it's also a good opportunity to think about your child's health.

"Simple checks such as an eye test, a dental appointment and making sure vaccinations are up to date can make a real difference to a child's wellbeing and help them get the best start to the new school year."

Parents who are unsure whether their child has received all recommended vaccinations are encouraged to check their child's vaccination record by contacting our vaccination booking centre on 0300 303 1373 or checking with their GP surgery.
