People of Gwent Encouraged to "Know Your Status" This HIV Testing Week

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is encouraging people across Gwent to get tested for HIV as part of HIV Testing Week (17-23 November), highlighting that anyone can get HIV, it doesn’t discriminate.

Recent figures from the Welsh Government show a 20% fall in new HIV cases across Wales, alongside an 8.3% increase in people getting tested, clear signs that progress is being made in early diagnosis and prevention.

Earlier this year, Gwent became a Fast-Track Region, joining a global movement to end new HIV transmissions and eliminate HIV-related stigma by 2030.

Tracy Daszkiewicz, Director of Public Health for Gwent said:
“Anyone can get HIV, it doesn’t discriminate. But anyone can test for it. The good news is that with effective treatment, people living with HIV can live long and healthy lives, and treatment also prevents the virus from being passed on to others (Undetectable = Untransmittable).

Testing is quick, free and completely confidential. You can even do it from home with a simple finger-prick test. Knowing your status helps protect you and others and helps stop the stigma.”

To mark HIV Testing Week, the Health Protection Team will be out in the community on the new Health Protection Unit (our Nye BeVAN) to raise awareness and answer questions about HIV testing and prevention.
