Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Updated to Support Future Pharmacy Services Across Gwent

1st October 2026

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has published its latest Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA), setting out current and future pharmacy service needs across the Health Board area.

The assessment is a statutory requirement and is regularly reviewed to ensure local pharmaceutical services continue to meet the needs of communities across Gwent.

The Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment provides a comprehensive picture of pharmacy provision across the region and will help inform decisions about future pharmacy services. It will also be used when considering applications for new community pharmacies and identifying opportunities to address local health needs through pharmacy-led care.

The document brings together information on the range of pharmaceutical services available to residents, including community pharmacies and dispensing GP practices. It also considers how services are delivered across local communities and neighbourhood care networks.

As part of the assessment, detailed mapping has been undertaken to show the location and accessibility of pharmaceutical service providers across the Health Board area. The report also examines population health needs, highlights any gaps in current provision, and identifies areas where additional pharmacy services may be required in the future.

Pharmacies continue to play an important role in supporting people to access healthcare closer to home, offering advice, treatment for a range of common conditions, support with medicines, and signposting to other services when needed.

The Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment will help ensure future planning and investment in pharmacy services is based on the needs of local communities, helping residents access safe, effective and convenient care when and where they need it.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback during the consultation period. All responses received were carefully considered, and amendments have been made where appropriate. A full summary of the consultation feedback and the Health Board's responses is included within the final PNA report at Appendix K.
