Prostate Cymru Funds New Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to Boost Urological Care in Wales

Leading Welsh prostate cancer charity, Prostate Cymru, has announced the funding of a new Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) post in the Urology department at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
The appointment of Rebecca Boyd to the role at the Royal Gwent Hospital marks a major step forward in strengthening regional healthcare capacity and improving support for urology patients across South East Wales.
The post is a direct result of the fundraising momentum generated by Prostate Cymru’s Walk of Wales challenge. The ambitious initiative has set a £300,000 target aimed at funding a Special Cancer nurse in every Welsh Health Board. Showing her support for the campaign firsthand, Becky will be joining the Walk of Wales on Tuesday 4th August, where she will step out alongside fellow walkers and fundraisers on the leg from Kington to Hay-on-Wye.

Having worked in Urology for over ten years, becoming a Surgical Care Practitioner has been a long-held career aspiration, and I feel incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to make this dream a reality.

This funding boost comes at a crucial time, as the urology department at the Royal Gwent Hospital continues to expand its state-of-the-art robotic surgery program. Robotic-assisted surgery allows surgeons to perform complex procedures - such as prostatectomies - with enhanced precision, smaller incisions, reduced recovery times, and improved patient outcomes. Having a dedicated Surgical Care Practitioner integrated into the team ensures seamless surgical assistance, smoother theatre workflows, and high-quality pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing these advanced robotic procedures.
