RSV Vaccine - Not Just for Winter

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is reminding people that the RSV vaccine provides year-round protection, not just during winter, with a single dose, which they can receive at their GP Practice or the ABUHB Vaccination Centre in Cwmbran.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is often linked to colder months, as cases peak in autumn and winter. However, the virus circulates all year, meaning the risk never fully goes away.

What is RSV?

RSV is a very common virus affecting the lungs and airways. It usually causes mild cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, cough and fever. However, for babies and older adults it can lead to more serious illnesses like bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Year-round protection

Although RSV activity is higher in winter, people can catch it at any time. That’s why the NHS vaccination programme runs all year, rather than seasonally like flu.

The vaccine is offered to eligible groups, including pregnant women and older adults, to ensure protection whenever exposure occurs.

Why timing matters

People are encouraged to have the vaccine as soon as they become eligible.

  • For pregnant women, vaccination from 28 weeks helps protect their baby from birth.

  • For older adults, a single dose provides longer-term protection against severe illness.

A common virus with serious impact

RSV is extremely common, but can be serious for babies, older adults and those with underlying conditions. Each year in Wales it contributes to hospital admissions and increased pressure on NHS services.

Unlike flu vaccines, the RSV vaccine currently provides lasting protection from one dose, making it suitable for year-round delivery.

Anyone offered the vaccine is encouraged to take it promptly to protect themselves and others.
