Lynette Taylor, a Ward Clerk at Nevill Hall Hospital, achieved an incredible health transformation after living with Type 2 Diabetes for over two decades.
Initially managing her Diabetes through mindful eating and regular exercise, Lynette’s habits changed over time, and she began to rely on comfort eating to cope with personal challenges. As her lifestyle shifted, she moved from oral medication to insulin therapy, eventually requiring twice-daily doses to manage her symptoms.
Following the end of a long-term relationship, Lynette found the motivation to take control of her health. In 2022, she joined Slimming World with a clear goal: to reach a healthier weight and improve her wellbeing. Supported by a positive and encouraging community, Lynette adopted a balanced diet and went on to lose an incredible seven stone. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “It was the best thing I did.”
In addition to changing her eating habits, Lynette took up running and now regularly runs around her local area. Earlier this year, she completed the Race for Life, raising over £200 for Cancer Research UK.
Crucially, Lynette’s commitment to changing her lifestyle led to putting her diabetes into remission. When she began her journey, her blood sugar levels ranged between 10 and 22. After reaching her target weight, those figures consistently fell within the normal range of 6 to 7. Over time, she reduced her insulin dosage from 38 units to just 8. By July last year, Lynette was officially classed as pre-diabetic, and by August, she was no longer dependent on insulin.
“The one thing I’ve learnt is that you have to do it for yourself”
Friday 14 November is World Diabetes Day - a day aimed at challenging stigma and raising awareness of the symptoms and daily challenges faced by those living with diabetes.
Lynette’s story illustrates the vital role that healthy eating and regular physical activity can play in managing type 2 diabetes.
