As we celebrate Social Prescribing Day on 26th March, the Health Board is proud to shine a spotlight on the work of Huw Rees, Nature Wellbeing Coordinator for Caerphilly, whose dedication is helping residents experience the proven benefits of nature for mental and physical wellbeing.
Working within the Primary Care and Community Division, Huw plays a key role in designing and delivering nature‑based interventions such as guided walks, outdoor mindfulness sessions, and green social prescribing initiatives. Each activity is tailored to help people reduce stress, build resilience, and reconnect with the natural environment.
Huw works closely with healthcare professionals, community groups, and environmental organisations to ensure programmes are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with wider public health priorities. By embedding nature into health and care pathways, these initiatives support long‑term wellbeing and help people take an active role in managing their own health.
A significant part of Huw’s work has focused on supporting the development and growth of several community walking groups, which continue to make a meaningful impact across Caerphilly:
The Dicky Tickers, now an established, confident group who regularly take part in community events.
The New Tredegar Strollers – who have grown in confidence and now operate fully independently.
Ein Llais – Ty Sign Canal Walk – a newer group steadily building strength and membership.

For Huw he says:
“The most rewarding outcome of these groups is the real friendships formed along the way, connections that reduce loneliness, boost confidence, and create a supportive sense of community.”
This Social Prescribing Day, we celebrate the positive impact of nature‑based wellbeing programmes and recognise the valuable work of staff like Huw in helping make healthier lifestyles accessible to all.
