World Mental Health Awareness Day

Thursday 10th October 2024

Today is World Mental Health Day and our Child and Adolesent Mental Health Service team (CAMHS) would like to send a message to you as parents / carers who are concerned about your child’s mental health, to self-refer through our Gwent  SPACE Wellbeing.

The Single Point of Access for Children’s Emotional (SPACE) Wellbeing brings together professionals that we are partnered with from different agencies across the ABUHB area; who support children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing, so that children and their families get the right help, from the right person, first time.

If you wish to request support for your child or young person through SPACE Wellbeing, please follow this link: How to access support services in your ABUHB area : Healthier Together (cymru.nhs.uk) – and select the area you live in.  A video is also available to explain how to self-refer through SPACE Wellbeing and how you can access support.

Thank you to our staff who helped to create a video to describe how you can self-refer.

The self-referral process not only means that you do not need to book an appointment with your GP but that you can tell us about the needs of your child and we have a full picture of what is going on.  This means that the services who attend our SPACE Wellbeing panels can use their expertise and skills to agree who would be best placed to support you.  Not all referrals need the support of CAMHS specifically and it could be the referral can be supported by other services who would be more suited.

We also welcome the voice of our Young People and our self -referral forms have a space to allow young people to tell us about their needs and concerns.

We will only contact you if we need additional information but please be assured that every single referral sent in via email or Microsoft Forms is considered and an outcome letter will be sent to families to make sure they know about the next steps.

Tracey Smith is the SPACE Wellbeing Team Manager: “All of our SPACE Wellbeing Co-ordinators and Administrative Assistants across Gwent SPACE Wellbeing are committed to supporting parents with making the self-referral process as accessible as possible.  Parents are encouraged to make contact with their SPACE Wellbeing Co-ordinator to ask any questions, check on the progress of the referral or ask for advice.  We will always aim to help.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing an urgent mental health crisis, please contact CAMHS on 01633 749519.
