What should staff do with the used tests?

Staff can safely dispose of the test items in their normal household waste but should pour any residual buffer solution away first.

Natural Resources Wales has provided the following advice on disposing safely of Lateral Flow Test waste:

  1. If the test is positive
    1. Drain any remaining reagent into the sink or toilet.
    2. Place the lateral flow test kit into a secure bag and keep this in a safe place for 72hrs. After this time, place in the domestic waste bag (normally a “black bag”)
    3. Do not place the test into any recycling waste streams.
  2. If the test is negative
    1. Drain any remaining reagent into the sink or toilet.
    2. Place lateral flow test kit into the domestic waste bag (normally a “black” bag).
    3. Do not place the test into any recycling waste streams.

What happens if the buffer solution is accidentally consumed?

As set out in the manufacturer’s safety instructions, the buffer solution is not hazardous; however, if accidentally ingested, a medical practitioner should be informed.

Can staff use the tests for their symptomatic family members?

The LFDs provided are for use of NHS staff only and should not be used on any family members who have developed any symptoms.
