Consultants & Medics (Who and what we do) (Do not usually wear a uniform but may wear white or other colour tunics)
Consultant Diabetologist/Endocrinologist are doctors who have studied and specialised in this discipline of medicine. They are the leaders of the diabetes service, and they have an in-depth knowledge and experience of looking after patients with diabetes and endocrine health conditions.
They will ask you questions about your health history and will work with you to plan what you need to help manage your diabetes/endocrine health conditions, this may well involve ordering blood tests, scans, x-rays or even referring you to another specialist within the diabetes team or in another area of medicine to help to ensure you get the best treatment. You will typically see your consultant within 6 weeks of your diagnosis or referral (unless urgent) in an outpatient setting/diabetes center and then depending on your treatment 4 – 6 months and then annually if you are to remain under the consultant team’s care. They may also discharge you to your GP who will follow up your care in the surgery.
