After your Appointment

There are signs and symptoms that you should look out for following an endoscopy procedure. The discharging nurse will go through these with you and will provide you with written advice on what to do if you have any problems.

If there is anything you are not sure about when you get home, please contact the endoscopy unit so that the staff can help you. If the endoscopy unit is closed, you can also contact NHS 111 at any time.

If you think you need immediate medical attention, call 999 or attend your nearest major A&E department.

Call 111 or the hospital where you had your procedure if you:

  • are bleeding heavily from your bottom or have bleeding that is getting worse
  • have severe stomach pain or pain that gets worse
  • have a high temperature, or you feel hot or shivery
  • have poo that’s dark or black, like tar
  • are short of breath
  • keep being sick

Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E department if you:

  • are vomiting blood
  • have severe stomach or chest pain
  • have stomach or chest pain that is getting worse

Do not drive to A&E. Ask someone to drive you or call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Bring any medicines you take with you.

Eating and drinking

Once you are back home, you can usually eat and drink as normal. We recommend starting slow so that you do not overload yourself after fasting, but there are usually no restrictions on what you can and cannot have.

If you do need to follow a specific diet after your procedure, you will be told about this before you leave the endoscopy department.
