How we support children and young people
School Nurses work with all children and teenagers age 5-16 no matter where they learn. School Nurses give friendly, confidential advice to help children and teenagers make good choices for a healthy future. School Nurses are here to listen to any worries you or your child may have about their health and wellbeing.
How to refer to the School Nursing Service
- Firstly, please gain permission from the young person - or seek parental consent - before making a referral. Let them know you feel they/their child would benefit from the support of their school nurse
- Next, you can complete a referral by filling in our Online Referral Form
- If you would like to speak to our team, you can call our referral line on 01633 431685. Or if the child is aged 11-19 let them know they can text us anonymously on 07312263262 for confidential support and advice
The Role of the School Nurse is:
- To assess and meet the identified health needs of school age children through an ongoing programme of health surveillance, monitoring, referral and intervention.
- To promote the health of school age children and the wider school community, through school and community based health education programmes and activities, through direct input to school health education programmes and teaching alongside education staff in class.
- To contribute to the identification and protection of school age children at risk of abuse, to provide ongoing monitoring, support and advice to vulnerable and abused children and their families.
- Organising and delivering public health initiatives e.g. immunisation programmes in schools, through education, raising the awareness of parents, children and teaching staff
