Bowel Cancer Awareness Month - Join Us for 5K Your Way

As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we’re hosting a 5K Your Way - Move Against Cancer x parkrun event at Tredegar Park, Newport, on Saturday 25 April.

Newport East has one of the lowest bowel cancer screening uptake rates in Gwent, and we want to help raise awareness of just how important screening is - even if you feel well and have no symptoms.

Representatives from Bowel Cancer UK will be at the event to chat to attendees, answer questions, and share information about the importance of bowel cancer screening, how to take part, and how early detection saves lives.

Move Your Way

5K Your Way is designed for everyone affected by cancer - including patients, families, friends, staff, and the wider community. And as we always say, you don’t have to RUN 5K. You can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply join us for a chat and a cuppa! The aim is to move in whatever way feels right for you.

Why It Matters

Physical activity has proven benefits for people affected by cancer, including support during recovery, improved wellbeing, and in some cases, better longterm outcomes.

The CHALLENGE Trial, a recent study looking at colorectal cancer patients, found that a structured exercise programme after treatment didn’t just improve fitness - it reduced the risk of cancer returning or causing death by 28%, and improved overall survival by 37%, compared with standard care alone.

5K Your Way brings science like this to life in our communities, offering people a supportive, social, and achievable way to get active.
