Major New Healthcare Development for South East Wales: Llantrisant Health Park

Thursday 12th February 2026

The vision for a regional healthcare hub in South East Wales has taken a significant step forward this week, following official approval of funding for phase one of the development by Welsh Government.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, in collaboration with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, will deliver a regional healthcare hub designed to improve access to diagnostic services and planned care for patients across South East Wales.

Developed to meet the growing and increasingly complex healthcare needs of the local population, Llantrisant Health Park will be located near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Rhondda Cynon Taf and is a major strategic investment in regional NHS infrastructure.

The first phase of Llantrisant Health Park will establish a state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Hub, providing a modern, purpose-built and easily accessible facility offering a wide range of essential diagnostic services. These will include:

  • MRI and CT scanning
  • Endoscopy diagnostics
  • Dedicated training facilities to support clinical skills development

The new diagnostic hub will expand capacity, reduce waiting times and provide quicker, more convenient access to vital tests and scans, helping to improve both patient experience and clinical outcomes.

This regional approach, bringing together three health boards, will maximise specialist clinical capacity and shared diagnostic services. It will support more consistent standards of care while helping to relieve pressure on existing acute hospital sites.

Integrated regional planning will also ensure the most efficient use of specialist staff and resources for patients across all three health board areas.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Jeremy Miles said: "This investment in Llantrisant Health Park demonstrates our commitment to building an NHS that works for everyone in Wales. By bringing together three health boards to deliver modern diagnostic services closer to where people live, we are taking practical steps to reduce waiting times and improve patient care across South-East Wales."
