Congratulations to the Day Surgery Unit at Nevil Hall Hospital which has been selected as BADS’ first Day Surgery Unit of the Month
The BADS (British Association for Day Surgery) has awarded the Day Surgery Unit at Nevill Hall with the first ever Day Surgery Unit of the Month award. Day Surgery Units from across the UK were considered, making this a particularly exciting achievement for the team at Nevill Hall.
Gemma Howard, Theatre Manager at the Unit, detailed the progress achieved by the Day Surgery team:
The Day Surgery Unit at Nevill Hall Hospital has undergone a transformational journey over the past two years, aligning our service with the core principles championed by BADS. With a clear ambition to become a Centre of Excellence in day surgery, we have reimagined how the unit operates—introducing an innovative Racetrack system, embedding HIT lists, and consistently delivering high-volume low-complexity (HVLC) lists with impressive efficiency.
These strategic changes have not only improved clinical throughput and reduced waiting times; but have also had a profoundly positive impact on staff morale and patient experience. Where the unit once lacked direction and underperformed in terms of turnover, we are now a cohesive, motivated team delivering safe, streamlined care in a vibrant, supportive environment.
Patient feedback reflects this shift-highlighting our professional, compassionate approach, the smoothness of their care journey, and the excellent communication from our multidisciplinary team. Internally, staff report feeling more valued, engaged, and empowered, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and pride in their work.
We are proud of the progress we have made and remain firmly focused on achieving Centre of Excellence status. Our unit stands as a testament to what can be achieved with vision, innovation, and a united team dedicated to delivering the highest standards in day surgery.
Congratulations to the whole team on their outstanding achievement!
