Covid-19 Boosters

Covid-19 Autumn Vaccine available from 1st October 2024

The primary aim of the national COVID-19 vaccination programme remains the prevention of severe illness (hospitalisations and deaths) arising from COVID-19. As currently available COVID-19 vaccines provide limited protection against mild and asymptomatic disease, the focus of the programme is on offering vaccination to those most likely to directly benefit from vaccination, particularly those with underlying health conditions that increase their risk of hospitalisation following infection.

Who is eligible for a Covid Booster?

For autumn 2024, JCVI advises that a COVID-19 vaccine should be offered to:

  • People aged 6 months to 64 years with a long-term health condition (which includes pregnant women and people with a weakened immune system)
  • Residents in a care home for older adults
  • People aged 65 years and older (age on 31 March 2025)
  • Unpaid carers
  • Staff working in care homes for older adults

This year JVCI guidance has not recommended that Frontline Health and Social Care Staff have a Covid-19 Autumn Booster , however, should any Frontline Health and Social Care wish to have added protection this Winter they can request an Autumn Booster vaccine by going to one of our Health Board vaccination clinics and requesting a vaccine, or they can call the booking centre, 0300 303 1373.

How can I get my Covid Booster?

Just like in previous years, we will be starting our Autumn Booster vaccinations in care homes across Gwent.
