Attending an appointment

When you’re referred to our service, we’ll invite you to an appointment with one of our specialist nurses. Depending on your circumstances, this will either be at a local clinic or we might come to your home.

During your appointment, we’ll discuss your medical history, the problems you’ve been having and any medication you’re taking. We may also:

  • test a sample of your urine
  • do an ultrasound scan
  • do a physical vaginal or anal examination

Once we’ve assessed you, we’ll discuss your options and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Your treatment may include things like:

  • pelvic floor exercises
  • medication
  • lifestyle changes
  • bladder or bowel training
  • specialist equipment

We’ll then agree on a follow up plan so we can see how you’re getting on. We may also refer you to other services such as:

  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Urology

You will be discharged from the Bladder and Bowel service once your treatment is complete or when no further progress can be made.

If you miss an appointment without contacting us beforehand, you’ll be automatically discharged from the service.
