The County Hospital is situated within pleasant, well kept grounds and there are seating areas in various locations for both patients and visitors.

The dining room can be found by taking the first turning immediately to the right inside the main entrance to the hospital, and following the path around the buildings. It is open to the public:

Monday to Friday 11:00. Serving hot food from 11:30 - 13:30

Please Note:

  • there are no vending facilities in the dining room
  • the dining room is not open on Bank Holidays
  • there is a 50% surcharge for non-NHS personnel

There are two public payphones. One is in the reception area of the administration block, 50 metres inside the main entrance, on the right hand side. This is available during office hours only (Monday - Thursday 8:30 - 16:30 & Friday 8:30 - 16:00)

The other is in the outpatient / minor casualty department and is available; Monday, Thursday & Friday - 8:00 - 17:00. Tuesday & Wednesday 8:00 - 20:00. Saturday & Sunday (minor casualty) 8:00 - 13:00.

The hospital entrance is towards the bottom of Coed-y-Gric Road, which runs between Stafford Road / Sunnybank Road and Station Road, near the Mason's Arms Public House.

From the M4 travelling West:

Take exit 25A, turning right at the roundabout, following the A4042 and signs for Cwmbran and Abergavenny. Continue on this road to the next roundabout and turn right following the A4042, Pontypool and Abergavenny, continue on the A4042 for about 7 miles to the roundabout at the junction with the A472 at Pontypool (McDonalds Restaurant on the right). Turn left onto the A472 and exit after 500 yards, signposted Griffithstown / College, turn left at the traffic lights. Continue to the roundabout, taking the first exit to Griffithstown, continue straight over the next roundabout. The first turning on the left is the entrance to the Talygarn and Ty-Siriol Units. For the County Hospital take the second turning on the left after the roundabout, onto Coed-y-Gric Road. County Hospital is on the left-hand side as you proceed down the hill.

From the M4 travelling East:

Take exit 26, turning left at the roundabout, following signs for Cwmbran and Abergavenny. Continue on this road to the roundabout and turn right following signs for the A4042, Pontypool and Abergavenny. At the next roundabout take the dedicated left hand lane for the A4042, continue on the A4042 for about 7 miles to the roundabout at the junction with the A472 at Pontypool (McDonalds Restaurant on the right). Turn left onto the A472 and exit after 500 yards, signposted Griffithstown / College, turn left at the traffic lights, continue to the roundabout, taking the first exit to Griffithstown, continue straight over the next roundabout. From the North:
The main road from the north is the A4042 from Hereford & Abergavenny, continue south on this road to the roundabout at Pontypool (McDonalds on the left). Turn right onto the A472 and exit after 500 yards, signposted Griffithstown / College, turn left at the traffic lights, continue to the roundabout, taking the first exit to Griffithstown. Continue straight over the next roundabout, the first turning on the left is the entrance to the Talygarn and Ty-Siriol Units. For the County Hospital take the second turning on the left after the roundabout, onto Coed-y-Gric Road. County Hospital is on the left-hand side as you proceed down the hill.

From the East:

The main road from the east is the A40/A472, which joins the A4042 at Little Mill, turn left onto the A4042 and continue south on this road to the roundabout at Pontypool (McDonalds on the left). Turn right onto the A472 and exit after 500 yards, signposted Griffithstown / College, turn left at the traffic lights. Continue to the roundabout, taking the first exit to Griffithstown, continue straight over the next roundabout. The first turning on the left is the entrance to the Talygarn and Ty-Siriol Units. For the County Hospital take the second turning on the left after the roundabout, onto Coed-y-Gric Road. County Hospital is on the left-hand side as you proceed down the hill.

From the West:

The main road from the west is the A472 from Crumlin, continue on the A472 through the roundabout with the A4043and take the exit signposted Griffithstown / College. Turn right at the traffic lights, turn right again at the next traffic lights, go straight through the next set of traffic lights, go left at the roundabout. Continue straight over the next roundabout, the first turning on the left is the entrance to the Talygarn and Ty-Siriol Units. For the County Hospital take the second turning on the left after the roundabout, onto Coed-y-Gric Road. County Hospital is on the left-hand side as you proceed down the hill.


By Bus:

Service number 15 Newport / Cwmbran / Trevethin runs half-hourly through Griffithstown from 06:45am to 10:45pm
Service number X23/X24 Newport /Cwmbran / Blaenavon also runs half-hourly through Griffithstown from 06:32am to 10:45pm
Service number X30 Cardiff /Cwmbran / Abergavenny runs hourly through Griffithstown from 7:00am to 6:00pm.
The bus stop for all services is at the top of Coed-y-Gric Road, a short walk from the hospital entrance.
Service number 18 Pontypool / Cwmbran runs hourly from 9:20am to 4:20pm, along New Road / Station Road, at the bottom of Coed-y-Gric Road.

There is limited car parking, and limited Blue Badge parking available in the grounds of the hospital. Parking at County Hospital is free.

County Hospital is a very busy community hospital which provides inpatient and outpatient services for the residents of Torfaen. It is conveniently located in the middle of Gwent being 8 miles north of the City of Newport and 12 miles south of Abergavenny. The hospital receives patients who normally reside in Torfaen, from both the Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall Hospitals for rehabilitation after strokes or orthopaedic surgery, as well as for general convalescence.

The hospital also accomodates patients waiting for placement in nursing or residential care homes and direct admission from home is accepted into General Practitioner medical beds.
