Care for Minor Injuries is provided by the Royal Gwent Hospital's Minor Injury Unit, which is run by our Emergency Nurse Practitioners.  Emergency Nurse Practitioners are experienced Clinical Professionals who specialise in the management of Minor Injuries.

They will be able to treat you if you have a broken bone, a sprain, bruise, wound, small burn, bite, or a minor eye or head injury and many other injuries.  This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Grange University Hospital provides specialist services for our most seriously ill patients and those with significant injuries, and is the designated trauma unit for Gwent.  It is likely that if you need to be cared for at The Grange University Hospital, you will be directed there by a Healthcare Professional or taken there after calling 999.

What is a Medical Assessment Unit?
If you have a medical emergency or severe illness that needs to be diagnosed then you will be referred to one of our Medical Assessment Units. Doctors working in these facilities will run tests and assess you before deciding on the best course of treatment for you. You can’t walk into a Medical Assessment Unit – you need to be referred by your GP, a Paramedic, or another Medical Professional.

Most of our patients who are referred to a Medical Assessment Unit go home on the same day. Those that need admission to hospital for further care will be moved to one of our wards. Some patients may move to a different hospital to receive the care they need.

Caring for Children

The Royal Gwent Hospital has a dedicated outpatients department for children which will provide clinic appointments with a play area.

Emergency care for children under one year old takes place at The Grange University Hospital.  Children over one year old should still attend the Royal Gwent Hospital for minor injuries.

Maternity Services

For care before and after birth the Royal Gwent Hospital provides antenatal and postnatal clinics led by consultants and midwives.

Travel, Parking and Facilities

New site map currently under review

This District General Hospital, with more than 3,400 staff and approximately 774 beds, provides a comprehensive range of hospital services for inpatients, day cases and outpatients.

The Health Board as a whole serves a population of more than 600,000 and many of the inpatient and specialist services at the Royal Gwent Hospital support the entire catchment area. Outpatient services are utilised primarily by those in Newport and the surrounding area.

A proposal is under discussion that would make the hospital a sub-Deanery of the University of Wales College of Medicine. This proposition builds on the substantial links that already exist between the Royal Gwent Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales, with a number of joint appointments in many clinical departments.

The hospital, along with St Woolos is serviced by the Operational Services Department.

Limited parking and Blue Badge parking is available within the hospital grounds and is free. 'Drop-off' points are also available should you need to drop someone at the hospital before you obtain a parking space. The staff at the front of the hospital will be able to direct you.

Extra parking is available and accessible via Mendalgief Road. To access Mendalgief Road, travelling away from the city centre, continue to go past the Royal Gwent Hospital (on your right), keep in the left hand lane, you will come to a set of lights. Turn left at the lights and take the second left into Mendalgief Car Park.

Travelling from the M4 Tredegar Park direction, continue along Cardiff Road with Belle Vue Park on your left. At the traffic lights, keep to the right hand lane. Turn right, then second left into Mendalgief Road car park.

Restaurants are Currently Staff Only

Due to Government advice concerning social distancing and other restrictions placed around Covid-19, it has regrettably been necessary to prohibit all visitors and members of the public from using the restaurant facilities at all of our hospital sites.

We very much regret the inconvenience this may cause to visitors and outpatients attending hospitals. However, we feel sure that you will understand that these measures are essential to protect our frontline NHS workers from the risk of infection within the community.

We appreciate your patience and understanding at this crucial time.
