Adult Asthma 

The prevalence of Asthma in Wales is one of the highest in the world with 13% of all adults reporting that they on treatment for this disease. In Wales there are approximately 4000 admissions with asthma every year, 30% higher than the rest of the UK. 

Severe asthma accounts for 7-10% of the asthmatic population yet uses 90% of asthma related healthcare resources. Its diagnosis and management can be complex and best undertaken by a multidisciplinary team. 

The aim of the ABUHB asthma service is to provide a multidisciplinary assessment and management of adult patients with asthma by providing a range of services including. 

  • Acute inpatient assessment 
  • Early follow up following acute presentation 
  • Specialist diagnostic services 
  • Consultant led severe asthma assessment. 
  • MDT discussion of complex cases 
  • Biologics services including home care. 
  • Nurse led follow up. 
  • Psychologist input 
  • Physiotherapy input for breathing pattern disorders 

 

Asthma in Pregnancy 

Asthma control may differ in pregnancy with some women experiencing no change or improvement in control, whilst others may unfortunately experience a deterioration. There are important issues to discuss and consider in the pre-conception, ante-nata, peri-partum and post-partum periods.
