Respiratory Psychology

Living with a respiratory condition and managing the demands of treatments can have a huge impact on people’s day-to-day lives and mental wellbeing. It might impact your day-to-day activity, sleep, roles, relationships and future plans. It is very normal to feel a range of emotions, for example worry, anxiety, anger and sadness. We also know that psychological factors can have an impact on respiratory symptoms and how people manage their condition.

As part of our secondary care respiratory teams, we have a dedicated respiratory psychology service to support people with the emotional impact of their respiratory condition. The psychology service aims to:

  • Reduce psychological distress associated with having a respiratory condition;
  • Improve the quality of life of people living with respiratory condition;
  • Help improve people’s management of their respiratory condition.

We offer 1-1 psychological therapy and psychology workshops. The psychologist also works closely with other healthcare professionals in our respiratory teams to support patient care.

You can find out more information about the service by looking at our patient information leaflet, or by speaking with a clinician within respiratory services (for example, your respiratory consultant or nurse specialist).

We have also included the following information and links to other services that you might find helpful.
