Dental Service Changes/Updates

The Health Board is responsible for providing General Dental Services (GDS) to residents throughout Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and commissions services from independent contractors through The National Health Service (General/Personal Dental Services Contracts) (Wales) Regulations 2006.

There are 73 (70 from April 2024) General Dental Practices that provide dental care to patients typically between Monday to Friday.

Since 2006, patients are not “registered” with a dental practice. It is the patients responsibility to attend their dental appointment and patients may need to attend the dental practice for dental care anything between 3 months to 24 months. However, the dental practice team will advise patients on how regular to attend appointments. If you do not regularly attend a dental practice and require urgent dental care, please contact the Dental Helpline on 01633 744387 or email ABB.Dental.Helpline@wales.nhs.uk, which is open Monday – Friday, 9:00am-12:15pm and 1:15pm-4:00pm. Patients should be advised that If they call the Dental Helpline for urgent dental care in the evenings (6.30pm-8am) they will receive advice only as there are no dental appointments available at this time. During weekends and Bank Holiday’s patients can also contact the Dental Helpline where a limited number of urgent appointments are available at Clytha Clinic, Newport and/or advice can be obtained. Patients can also go to their local community pharmacy to ask about pain relief and advice on over the counter medication.

In the event the Health Board receives a request for service change, the Health Board considers all options in consultation with Gwent Local Dental Committee and citizen voice body, Llais.
