Mya's story

Mya developed gestational diabetes during both of her pregnancies and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes shortly after the birth of her second child.

Since then, sharing her struggles with the psychologist, along with support from the medical team and her family have helped.

“I have always looked after myself, but food has always been my vice. Chocolate, biscuits and cake are my go-to when I am feeling low or want to treat myself. I never had any problems with my weight. It seemed so unfair that after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I could no longer enjoy my favourite foods whenever I wanted to....guilt was always there....one day during an appointment with my diabetes nurse I started crying and said that I just wanted diabetes to give me a break. She asked if I wanted to see the psychologist so I jumped at the chance. I ended up seeing them over a six month period.

She helped me feel that I wasn’t stupid......that it wasn’t my fault......I could eat the same breakfast one day and have a hypo and the next day not......I stopped blaming myself automatically.

I have learnt all sorts of strategies to help me manage my diabetes and even let myself enjoy the odd cake again!”
