The Austin Friars Treatment Centre is located on the 2nd floor of Specsavers, Friars Walk Shopping Centre, Newport.
With funding from the Welsh Government the centre has been developed through collaboration between Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Specsavers. At the centre, the first of its kind in the UK, a high street optician provides initial screening and referrals for people with symptoms of wet age related macular degeneration (AMD). A hospital team including Consultants, Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioners and healthcare support workers deliver treatment for the condition in the same location. Lead nurse for this team is Diane Aulsebrook.
