Akmal brings a wealth of experience, vision, and dedication to his role as Independent Member (third sector). Having recently completed a highly accomplished and transformative 8-year term with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAVUHB), Akmal has demonstrated unwavering commitment to reducing health inequalities and addressing the root causes of disparity in economically deprived and underserved communities. His work has consistently focused on ensuring equitable access to health services and advocating for community-led health solutions.
A dynamic social entrepreneur, Akmal is the Founder and Chief Executive of Assadaqaat Community Finance (ACF) UK, an innovative not-for-profit organisation that empowers marginalised communities through financial inclusion and entrepreneurship. Under his leadership, ACF has become a catalyst for economic upliftment among disadvantaged groups, promoting self-sufficiency and resilience through enterprise.
Living in Cardiff, Akmal draws on his global corporate knowledge, experience and extensive international travels to inform his inclusive, cross-cultural approach to governance and leadership. He has held strategic board-level roles across public, private, and corporate sectors both nationally and internationally. His current roles include Independent Member of Welsh Water, Glas Cymru Holdings Cyfyngedig, and University Business Tutor at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, where he mentors the next generation of business leaders.
An internationally sought-after contributor and visionary thought leader, Akmal is frequently invited as a Guest Lecturer and Keynote Speaker on topics such as International Business Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Financial Inclusion, and Islamic Finance.
