Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has today unveiled ‘Gwent 35’ – an ambitious 10-year strategy designed to ensure that by 2035, everyone across Gwent has the same opportunity to live a long, healthy life.
The new strategy marks a major milestone for the Health Board and builds on the strong foundations of its previous Clinical Futures programme.
The Health Board is committed to building the future of health and wellbeing in Gwent together with communities, staff, and partners. To make this happen, the Health Board spoke to nearly 7,000 people, asking a simple but powerful question: ‘What’s important for you to feel healthy?’ The feedback and insight gathered has enabled the organisation to understand where its focus should be over the next decade and, ultimately, has helped to create the Gwent 35 strategy.
The feedback received has shaped three key aims of the strategy that will guide the Health Board’s work over the next decade:
The strategy sets out a shared vision for prevention, partnership, and tackling inequalities so that every person has the chance to thrive. It comes at a crucial time, as the population of Gwent continues to change rapidly. By 2043, the number of people aged 65 and over will rise by 26%, while the number of under-18s will remain largely the same. This means more people will need support, but there will be fewer working-age adults to provide it – a challenge that requires bold action now.
Nicola Prygodzicz, Chief Executive of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, said: “I’m delighted to launch ‘Gwent 35’, a strategy that looks ahead to a future where health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. This builds on the success of our Clinical Futures programme and reflects what matters most to the people of Gwent.
"I want to thank our incredible staff, partners, and community members for working with us to shape this vision. We can’t do this on our own – delivering this strategy will take all of us working together to create lasting change."
Launching ‘Gwent 35’ marks the beginning of a wider programme to bring about the highest standards of care, health and wellbeing to the people of Gwent. Over the coming months and years, the Health Board will work hand-in-hand with communities, partners, and staff to turn the vision of the Gwent 35 strategy into reality.
As part of the Gwent 35 strategy, in the next week the Health Board will also be launching our new Values and Behaviours Framework and People Plan for our valued staff members.
