'I Was Nervous Too': Helen's Story About Bowel Screening, Fear, and Why We Need to Talk About Poo

For many people, talking about bowel habits can be uncomfortable. But for Helen, being open about her bowel symptoms, and going back to her GP when something still didn’t feel right, may have saved her life.

“I know for some people talking about bowels and poo is very hard. My background as a nurse, I’ve never had that problem. There is nothing we haven’t heard before”

Feeling Nervous Is Normal - Going Anyway Is Vital

Helen is honest about her fears. But she emphasises the relief that comes from getting answers.

“By the time the diagnosis came, I was relieved. At least I knew. My next question was, ‘So what happens next?’”

Even though she was nervous, she felt completely supported during her diagnosis and throughout the course of her treatment.

“The staff were fabulous. Someone held my hand the whole time. It’s their bread and butter”

Trust your Gut

Helen isn’t one for embarrassment. But she knows that’s not the case for everyone.

Her message is simple:

  • Don’t ignore persistent bowel changes.
  • Don’t be embarrassed to talk about poo - everyone does it.
  • Don’t put off going to the GP if you’re experiencing persistent symptoms
  • Do the FIT test when it arrives.

“It might feel awkward,” Helen says, “but it could save your life.”
