We have been subject to break-ins over the weekend at both St Cadoc’s Hospital and St Woolos Hospital. A number of individuals unlawfully entered secure, locked areas of the sites to create content for social media. During the incident, they forced entry into several areas, including locations where historic patient records are stored. We are working closely with Gwent Police as they investigate this criminal matter.
Protecting patient information and maintaining the security of our records is of the utmost importance. All patient records are held in secure areas and we continue to assess against data protection legislation.
We are extremely disappointed that individuals chose to unlawfully enter secure premises and access areas containing sensitive information. St Cadocs and St Woolos Hospitals are functioning hospital sites and we are disappointed that people have entered these premises unlawfully as there are staff and vulnerable patients on site. This is unacceptable. We have also had to put further security measures in place to prevent this happening again. This comes at a cost to the Health Board and represents public funds that would otherwise be available to support patient services, particularly as we remain in a critical incident due to operational pressures.
We would like to thank members of the public who have contacted us to raise concerns and bring this matter to our attention. We take any incident involving the security of our sites and information seriously and will continue to work with Gwent Police to support their investigation. We are also in contact with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
