Grange nurse helps save shopper's life after medical emergency

An Emergency Department nurse from The Grange University Hospital put her advanced life support skills into action when a shopper suffered a medical emergency recently at a Cardiff shop.

Morgan McIntyre, who works in the Emergency Department at The Grange, was shopping at Costco in Cardiff when a woman suddenly collapsed and required urgent medical assistance. Drawing on her emergency care training and Advanced Life Support (ALS) training, Morgan immediately stepped in to assess the situation and begin life-saving CPR.

Taking the lead in the resuscitation effort, Morgan coordinated the emergency response until ambulance crews arrived and took over the patient's care. Morgan stayed until the patient was conveyed to hospital.

Morgan said: "I am fully trained and work within the emergency department, so situations like this aren't uncommon. The only thing that was different was that I wasn't in hospital. This is where my training in advanced life support played a vital role.

"We worked together well as I took the lead of the situation and tried to have some organisation. We all remained calm whilst in a stressful situation."

“I think CPR should be part of the curriculum in schools it is very important to know life saving skills in emergency situations. I think I was meant to be there that day as the outcome could've been very different. It means a lot that my skills and knowledge and fast thinking saved a life and it is a proud achievement of mine.”

Colleagues at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board have praised Morgan's quick thinking, professionalism and calm leadership during a highly stressful situation.

The incident highlights the vital role healthcare professionals can play in responding to emergencies, both in the workplace and in the community.
