Helipad Re-opened Following Successful Test Landings

Thursday 12th February 2026

The Grange University Hospital (GUH) Helipad, located outside the Emergency Department, re-opened following successful test landings last week.

The test activity was supported by colleagues from the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, EMRTS, the Health Board’s Estates and Facilities team, who ensured the site was prepared and safely managed throughout.

Following the successful trials, the helipad went live on 10th February 2026, initially for daylight operation. Work is underway to move to full 24/7 operations as soon as possible.

Steve Bonser, Associate Director of Operations, said:
“This marks an important milestone for the Health Board. The helipad has been closed since 26 November 2023 to allow essential construction on the Emergency Department extension, part of our ongoing investment in improving urgent and emergency care capacity.

“During its last full year of operation (November 2022 – November 2023), the GUH helipad saw around 45 landings, and we anticipate demand may increase given the growth in patient demand over the last two years.”

Take a look at the photos from the test landings below - thank you to all colleagues involved in supporting this significant step forward for patient care.
