Fracture Liaison Service (FLS)

What is the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS)?

A Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is a specific model of care formed by nurses, doctors and other allied health care professionals with expertise in osteoporosis, bone health and fracture prevention. The FLS is usually led by a consultant geriatrician or consultant rheumatologist and assisted by a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) with an aim reducing risks of fractures in the future.

What do we do?

We identify people over the age of 50 years who have had a fragility fracture, and our objective is to reduce the possibility of them sustaining further fractures.

A dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) proactively identifies fracture patients on a system-wide basis, usually using recent x-rays or scans, sometimes the patient doesn’t know they have the fracture – we call this an incidental finding.

If we suspect that you have sustained a fragility fracture, we will contact you to complete a health assessment and to ask you further questions regarding your bone health. This helps us confirm if you have sustained a fragility fracture and if so, to arrange further investigations.

If you are deemed to be at high risk of future refractures, then the FLS will facilitate the initiation of effective osteoporosis treatment for you and our coordinators will arrange for you to be assessed by a nurse or doctor via telephone.
