Volunteering Week: Molly's story

Molly, 34, from Caerphilly, is a mum of three who turned her own experience of anxiety into something positive for others. At a time when her mental health was struggling, she wanted to find a way to support women going through similar challenges.

She started by setting up weekly walks.

Six months on, those walks have grown into a supportive community of more than 100 women. Sessions now run on Monday evenings and Tuesday and Saturday mornings, with shorter one-hour walks to keep them accessible, and a longer walk at the weekend for those wanting a bit more of a challenge.

The aim is simple: to help women who may be feeling isolated reconnect with themselves, with nature and with each other.

Molly says walking side by side can make all the difference.
“Sometimes it’s easier to talk when you’re walking, rather than sitting face to face. We support each other, we listen, and you come away feeling like a weight has been lifted.”

Women attend for many reasons, including loneliness, grief and anxiety. Friendships have formed, with some now meeting outside the group for a weekly catch-up over a cup of tea.

The group is entirely voluntary and free, and Molly is now expanding what’s on offer, with plans for activities like forest bathing, tai chi and cold water dips. She also hopes to one day open a small community hub where women can come together in a safe space.

Volunteering has transformed Molly’s own confidence too.
“I had no confidence before I set this up, I used to stand in front of the group and visibly shake. Now I love the difference I’m making. It’s had such a positive impact on so many people, including me.”

Molly’s story shows how volunteering can not only support others, but help you find your own strength too.
