Dedicated Team at the Heart of Ystrad Mynach Breast Unit are Here for Patients 'Every Step of the Way'

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr’s Breast Care Unit has seen a staggering 7430 patients to date since its opening in February this year, and its committed team of caring staff are more passionate than ever about supporting patients throughout their breast cancer journey.

The purpose-built unit, located at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in Ystrad Mynach, brought together the clinical teams from Nevill Hall and the Royal Gwent Hospitals’ breast services under one roof. Providing outpatient care, diagnostic investigations and surgery for breast cancer, the unit’s team is made up of a number of different healthcare professionals, from healthcare support workers and breast nurses, to mammographers, radiologists, consultants and surgeons, along with an administration support team.

In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, some of the multi-disciplinary team are reflecting on the importance of this fantastic new facility in Gwent and the impact it has had on patients so far. With high-quality patient care at the forefront, the team pride themselves on offering a seamless, welcoming experience for patients from the moment they step through the doors of the unit.

Kay Croke, an Outpatient Booking Clerk, is one of the team members warmly welcoming patients at reception and is on hand to answer any queries.

Kay said: "I love my role here in the Breast Centre. It's really rewarding to help patients in this new facility, allowing for a one-stop visit instead of multiple appointments. All my colleagues here are wonderful and offer the very best care to the patients we see."

Natalie, a Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist, is dedicated to supporting patients through every step of their breast cancer journey, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care. Having started her career as a district nurse, Natalie developed a deep passion for breast cancer care after working closely with many patients affected by the disease. Now, nine years later, she plays a key role in guiding patients from referral through to post-treatment recovery.

Natalie said: "It can be a frightening time to go through, so patients need someone to simplify the process and make it as stress-free as possible. It's a privilege to be able to support people at their most vulnerable and make even the tiniest difference in their lives.”

Dr. Khulood Al Rawi, Consultant Radiologist, plays a pivotal role in diagnosing and guiding treatment through advanced imaging techniques such as mammograms, biopsies, and MRIs. Supporting patients from diagnosis through to follow-up care, Dr. Al Rawi provides reassurance to patients during challenging times.

Dr. Al Rawi said: "It’s a privilege to support patients and help them feel cared for, even in the toughest moments.”

Sophie, a Physician Associate, aids in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients. She runs her own clinics and assists in Theatres, playing a key role in patient care. Sophie is passionate about making a difference to patients’ lives and is currently working on a Quality Improvement project focused on enhancing hormone therapy pathways.

Sophie said: "Many patients come to the breast unit expecting the worst, but we’re here for them every step of the way. I’m a people person, and this job allows me to use my knowledge while making a real difference in patients' lives."

Mr. Sharat Chopra, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, specialises in new patient and oncoplastic reconstruction clinics for breast cancer patients and is passionate about providing the highest quality of care while also advancing breast cancer research.

Mr. Chopra said: "We work closely with patients to go through their treatment options in detail. It’s incredibly rewarding to see patients benefit from new techniques and treatments as we guide them through their journey.”

The team encourages everyone to perform regular self-checks on their breasts for any new or persistent changes such as lumps, skin dimpling, or abnormal nipple discharge, and to consult a GP with any concerns.
