It's Dietitians Week - an exciting week where we celebrate all of our fantastic dietitians in the Health Board but also look at what the future might bring for Dietetics.
Meet Phil, an Allied Health Professional and Dietitian who joined the Health Board in 2023.
Phil plays a crucial role in supporting young people with eating difficulties, providing psychoeducation on nutrition and the effects of starvation. His work helps improve their nutritional intake and, in some cases, their growth percentiles, making a real difference in their wellbeing.
“No two days are ever the same in my role. I can go from administrative tasks to assessments, as well as running one-to-one and group clinics - all with the goal of helping young people build a varied and adequate diet. Being part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team has been invaluable, giving me the support and confidence to navigate challenges and provide the best care possible.”
Meet Marguerite, an Allied Health Professional, dedicated Dietitian and Dietetics Team Lead, supporting young people on their journey to better health.
After starting her career in ABUHB as a Dietitian, Marguerite briefly left in 2011 - only to return in 2022, bringing a wealth of experience with her! Originally from Ireland, she moved to Cardiff to study dietetics, driven by her fascination with how nutrition shapes our health.
Marguerite shared: “What I love most about my role is helping young people who are potentially at their lowest point get to the other side and reclaim their lives.”
Technology
Technology is moving at lightning speed, and this is no different in Dietetics. Technology supports our patients in making dietary changes to improve their health, allows for interactive discussions between clinicians and patients and allows monitoring of conditions easier for all.
Gastroenterology Tec
Within the Gastroenterology Dietetic team, technology is an essential tool that we use in a wide variety of ways on a daily basis to support our patients, manage our case load and develop our practice.
We use video calling to provide remote individual appointments and group education sessions. This provides flexibility for patients and potentially helps us reach a wider audience. Online resources are used to instantly access information including current research, guidelines, and product information. The use of communication tools are essential to allow instant sharing of information between health professionals and patients. This is just a few of the many ways technology is essential in our practice.
Diabetes Team Tec
Technology is changing how diabetes dietitians work with our patients by supporting them to make decisions based on real-time data. With remote access to tools like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pump reports, we can now review data and trends in blood glucose and insulin use remotely. During virtual or one-to-one consultations, these reports can be shared on screen, allowing for interactive discussions that help us ask targeted questions and work with people with diabetes to develop truly individualised care plans.
Technology also supports our patients in making dietary changes to improve their health. Apps like Carbs & Cals help individuals better understand the carbohydrate content of different foods, aiding more informed choices and improved blood glucose management.
This tech-enabled approach both enhances clinical decision-making and empowers patients. Many describe the technology as a “game changer,” noting that it significantly reduces the daily burden of managing diabetes. By having clearer insights into their own data and receiving more tailored support, people with diabetes feel more in control and supported in managing their condition.
