Monday 17th April 2023

A memorial ceremony for the late Dr Mehboob Ali was held on Saturday 15th April at Pengam Health Centre.

The memorial event gave thanks to Dr Ali, who was a much-loved doctor and was our longest serving General Practitioner in Gwent. It also marked his birthday, as he would have been 81 years old.

Dr Ali worked tirelessly as a single-handed GP at Pengam Health Centre, providing outstanding service for over 45 years.

The event was extremely well attended and saw the coming together of his wife, Mrs Ali, his family, members of the Health Board, colleagues of Dr Ali and local residents.

Judith Paget, Director General of Health and Social Services/Chief Executive NHS Wales; Ann Lloyd, Chair of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Dr Liam Taylor, Deputy Medical Director all shared words of thanks to the late Dr Ali and paid tribute to his tireless work for his local community.

Dr Ali's daughter Sophia shared a moving speech, recalling memories of a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.

Dr Heather Griffiths presented a 'Nye Bevan' rose to Dr Ali's family on behalf of the locality team.

Mrs Ali unveiled a memorial plaque, which is now sited in the reception area of Pengam Surgery.

Dr Liam Taylor added, "As a GP, you need a good, strong family behind you, so this tribute isn't just to Dr Ali, but to his beloved wife and family who supported him."
