National Doctors' Day!

Thursday 30th March 2023

Today is National Doctors’ Day and we would like to say a massive thank you to all of the fantastic doctors who work in our Health Board!

We asked our staff to nominate a doctor who goes above and beyond for patient care and their colleagues. You can read their nominations below.

Dr. Llifon Edwards

“I would like to nominate Dr. Llifon Edwards for all the hard work and support he does both on the sites and in the Flow Centre.”

“I nominate our Flow Centre Consultant, Dr. Llifon Edwards. He is an invaluable resource in the Flow Centre, providing help and advice to GP’s, paramedics and Flow Centre staff. He pitches in and supports call handlers when the call queue is busy and carries out personal welfare checks on patients who haven't made it into hospital yet to check they are ok. These are just a few examples of how he always goes above and beyond in all that he does!”

Mr Ian G Mackie

“I would like to nominate Mr Ian G Mackie, a Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant who goes above and beyond for his patients and colleagues. He is going to finish his 50th year of service in another year. He cares for his patients and tries his best in accommodating their wishes, interests and working hard to achieve the goals of treatment despite the utmost complications and complexity of the patients. He does not settle until results are yielded.”

Dr. Noor Din

“I would like to nominate Dr. Noor Din for going above and beyond for his patients. Despite having a tough few months himself, he continues to be a doctor who does everything he can for patients. He also mentors many staff and helps any way he can, is always happy to answer a question and have a chat! He is a doctor I would feel happy and safe being under the care of.”

Dr. Gagan Belludi

“I would like to nominate Dr. Gagan Belludi, as a doctor who deserves recognition for going above and beyond for the Newport CRT patients. Dr Belludi has an excellent, calm bedside manner with the patients and their families. He is the Doctor that we, as a team, would like to be caring for us if the need arises. He is also an excellent teacher for our team, constantly looking for ways to improve the service and is always approachable, always in a good mood, he is humorous, kind and knowledgeable. He so deserves some recognition!”

“Dr. Belludi is an excellent mentor who never fails to devote his time, knowledge, expertise and experience to help others grow and succeed. Dr. Belludi is a source of inspiration. He has a heart of gold, very caring and down to earth. He shows compassion and empathy to his patients.

He is a true leader and role model. He does not hesitate to accept mistakes but find positive learning from it. He is not afraid to share his learning so we can do better. I could not say more but praises for Dr. Belludi.”

Dr. Mohamed Elsout

A doctor that I believe goes above and beyond for their patients and colleagues is Dr. Mohhamed Elsout. Currently based in Ty-Cyfannol, Acute General Adult Mental Health ward at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr.

Dr. Elsout is a Psychiatry Trainee who I have witnessed doing great work for both the department and our patients. He is a favourite amongst staff and service users alike.

I can recall one time of many, where Dr. Elsout has truly shown his stripes as a super doctor. Whilst on annual leave, we were having issue getting an endoscopy booked for one of our very vulnerable patients. As I was unfamiliar with the systems in place at ABUHB being a newly qualified Physican Associate, Dr. Elsout was on hand immediately without question to ensure that I was supported in this and that the patient would get closer towards receiving the important investigation they vitally needed. This is just one example of many of Dr. Elsout giving much of his spare time to his patient and colleagues.

Dr. Elsout is known to have driven 100 miles+ on night shifts in order to review patients over the large area of Caerphilly whilst on-call, when he could have just as easily called on others to do this for him. And not to mention the countless times he has been in early and left late in order to ensure that the ward works smoothly.”

Dr. Fidan Yousef

“Dr. Fidan Yousuf has been a Consultant Hepatologist with ABUHB for several years.

She has a passion for the patient experience and has been instrumental in creating and running one of the very few patient support groups for those living with liver disease. These are evening meetings, open to all, and Dr. Yousuf has arranged speakers on a variety of patient experience related topics including diet and liver disease, psychology of living with chronic illness and understanding more about liver conditions. These are monthly face to face meetings (with a stint on Microsoft Teams during the pandemic) which Dr. Yousuf organises and runs. Such patient focused meetings can be difficult to organise and keep going, from patient interest, other pressures on the doctor’s time and the unpredictable interactions that can occur in such informal settings. However, Dr. Yousuf has created these meetings to be informal but interesting and managed to maintain engagement from a variety of patients and their families, whilst fostering a positive environment.

In addition to her work with the liver support group, Dr. Yousuf champions the need for honest dialogue and advance planning for patients who have advanced liver disease. She consistently encourages colleagues to think about patient prognosis and discusses this with the patient and their relatives. She has forged close links with our colleagues in palliative care and supports our specialist nurses in discussing ceiling of care and care at home.

This approach to patient centred care, and the collaborative approach that Dr. Yousuf encourages among our Hepatology Team in ABUHB, led to the Gwent Liver Unit being the only IQILS (Improving Quality in Liver Services) level two accredited unit in Wales - and one of only ten in the entire UK! This is an incredible achievement that would not have been possible without Dr. Yousuf.

You can find more information about the liver support groups on the Gwent Liver Unit twitter page: @GwentLiverUnit.

More information about national support for our support group (and evidence of how rare these regular groups are) can be found on the British Liver Trust's website.
