New Organ Donation Storyboards Unveiled in The Grange University Hospital

Friday 25th August 2023

Today we celebrated the unveiling of four new organ donation storyboards at The Grange University Hospital.

The boards contain two stories from organ donation recipients; David Fellowes and Angharad Rhodes, and two from the families of two organ donors; Jamie Clayden and Sandra Beale. The purpose of the storyboards is to raise awareness and start conversations with loved ones about organ donation.

The unveiling of the storyboards was jointly presented by Peter Carr, Executive Director of Therapies & Health Science, Dr. Matthew Carwardine, Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Organ Donation and Sharon Keightley, Specialist Nurse Organ Donation.

“As a Health Board, we are really keen to support organ donation. This is a fantastic activity for raising awareness about organ donation, in a busy part of the hospital, and gives people the opportunity to stop, take the information in and think” said, Peter Carr.

“It’s planting the seed in people’s mind that they can take away, have conversations with their family and think about what they want for themselves. I think that’s incredibly powerful.”

The recipients and family of the donors featured in the storyboards were also invited to the unveiling.

“I had my transplant eleven years ago and thankfully everything is going well, I just need to go for a blood test every four months. But what it did eleven years ago certainly changed my life” said, David Fellowes.

“If anyone is thinking about organ donation, don’t just assume that because we’re in Wales we have presumed consent, don’t leave it at that. Please register your name officially and most importantly, talk it through with your family so they are aware as well."

The boards are located on the ground floor of the hospital. To view them, walk past the lifts in main reception to end of the north (green corridor).
