Staff Thanked For Their Care, Understanding and Compassion

“On behalf of my family, please pass on our sincere gratitude and thanks to all staff working in the Emergency Department on the 13th July 2023, especially the staff in Resus and Majors.

My father Albert came in by ambulance in the morning after I received a call from his carer telling me that Dad wasn't well, although I had only left him the evening before with no concerns. Unfortunately, Dad had become very unwell overnight and needed urgent care, which is what he received, only waiting 15 minutes from my call to an ambulance and Dad receiving prompt efficient care on arrival. Within the hour, I was informed that Dad wasn't expected to pull through and that his condition was critical. At this point, I was able to contact family who could make their way to the hospital, some driving a couple of hours to be able to be with Dad.

Dad was moved from Resus and went into a cubicle in Majors. We are a very large family and children, grandchildren and great grandchild started to arrive. At one time, I recall at least 14 of us with him. Not once were we asked by anyone to limit the people at Dad’s bedside and staff provided us with tea, coffee and biscuits and constantly checked to see if we needed anything. Dad passed away at 23:30 that same day of sepsis.

The staff’s understanding and compassion ensured that Dad passed away peacefully, pain free with dignity and with family at his side. As a family, this has been very hard for us as we only lost our Mum (Jean) in March at Nevill Hall Hospital, where she also received excellent care. Dad is now at peace with mum who he missed immensely after 68 years of marriage.

There has been immense criticism of the Emergency Department at The Grange University Hospital since its opening, but I can only say that my experience with my late parents has been excellent. When you need that urgent care, it's there. This is what the Emergency Department is about.

Thank you from our whole family.” – Karen, Albert and Jean’s daughter.
