Important Announcement - Minor Injury Units

*Important Announcement*

Our Minor Injury Units (MIUs) across Gwent can treat a wide variety of minor injuries in adults and children over 1 year old, but they CANNOT treat illnesses or severe injuries. Recently, we have had patients visiting our MIUs with medical problems that need to be treated at The Grange University Hospital, which has resulted in them needing to be transferred.

We want to make sure our local residents know how to go to the right place, first time, so here’s a reminder that our MIUs CAN’T treat the following:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stroke
  • Severe headache
  • Collapse or fit
  • Mental Health problems
  • Overdose and poisoning
  • Abdominal pain
  • Minor illness
  • Pain in limbs or joints that is not caused by an injury
  • Dental problems
  • Injuries following a fall from over 1m or > 5 steps, such as a pedestrian hit by a vehicle
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Children under 1yr
